Freeman chronicles these final days in Lee’s Lieutenants.

Lee and Longstreet were basically in a continuous hustle to stay out of Union gun range.

Worn out, disorganized, out of supplies and hungry.

One of the stinging moments of this final hour was a young Union Cavalry officer riding up with a flourish and arrogantly directly ordering Longstreet to show up at the surrender site. Longstreet cursed him as he rode away.

That young officer was George Custer.
