Oldest stars? Are they going to give them plastic surgery?

How much of this is science and how much of this is making up an unverifiable story that no one knows how to contradict?

I’m sure they would be willing to, but that could be circular. Many “academic” fields operate that way.

In Biblical Studies, if a guy who can read 8 modern and 20 ancient languages has particular archaeological talents and applies these to something in the Old Testament, none of his “peers” have precisely the same skill set. It is also entirely possible that the man (and many of his peers) have read less than half of the Bible.

“Peer” reviewed material conforms to community standards, but communities have blind spots, and may accept some theories as facts and build from there—if a theory goes down, one will need to read much based upon it with caution.

At least in Economics (my first field), we were clearly after money and not truth. You want a result? Pay us to construct a model. (a fairly close paraphrase of my academic advisor)

Supposedly there are hundreds of billions of galaxies. They write this as if these very old stars are very rare, but maybe all the other galaxies have some, not just our galaxy.

And if you give them more grant money...they'll find some even older stars.

And after that...if you give the...never mind...

Seems like two simple deductions coupled to form a rather elegant conjecture. The stars’ primitive chemistry reveals their age, and their contrary direction suggests an explanation for their presence here.

Supposedly there are hundreds of billions of galaxies.

Astronomers counted the galaxies in a small portion of the sky and multiplied by the balance of the sky.

The portion was about one-tenth the apparent diameter of the moon--about what you would see by looking through a drinking straw, or a twenty-six millionth of the whole sky. They found 10,000 galaxies:

It’s all just a “best guess” that they keep trying to refine.

Hmmm...
Sounds like excellent experimental-analysis work... The old-fashioned way...

Not fabricated by a computer...

Now, in addition to millions of drunk-driving Migrant-Invader Vermin, we have to worry about stars going the wrong way...
This might end badly...

“They are so close and accessible, they could be key to understanding?”

They are 30,000 light years away. That’s not exactly our next door neighborhood.

Still I like following this stuff. Thanks Red Badger.

They photographed that particular part of the sky because there were relatively few bright nearby stars in the way. Is there any reason to think that area had a greater density of galaxies than would be found in any other direction?

It is in the constellation Fornax, the furnace. (Fornax must not be confused with fornix, "arch" or "brothel" from which we get words like "fornicate.").

In any case, no matter how many galaxies there are, earth is probably the only planet with drinking straws.
