The WNBA is on the cusp of upgrading its travel logistics.
The league is discussing the parameters of all 12 teams flying by charter “as soon as this regular season,” USA Today’s Christine Brennan reported on Tuesday.
“Why now? The explosion of interest in the league, business growth and anticipated future revenue from the next media deal,” Brennan wrote on X.
WNBA commissioner Cathy Englebert quickly confirmed the report, telling reporters Tuesday that the charter flights will be up and running “as soon as we can get the planes in place.”
The WNBA has been in a pickle for several years about teams flying commercial.
Two years ago, the league fined the Liberty $500,000 for breaking the rules and flying private, as players crowed on social media about getting treated well by team ownership.
On one hand, the players become household names in college basketball, where in many cases they fly private.
On the other, the league is entering its 28th season and has traditionally lost money and been subsidized by the NBA.

Black players and lesbos are upset that Caitlyn in the cause of all this.
Caitlyn Clark is to the WNBA what Tiger Woods was to golf.
They’re living high off the hog while some FReepers have no issue with Clark being paid less than the avg municipal bus driver.
“Two years ago, the league fined the Liberty $500,000 for breaking the rules and flying private”
Some owners were willing to pay for their team to fly private, they should have been allowed to do so.
New York Cosmos were popular when Pelé played for them.
The league isn't profitable yet. Maybe just give her a percentage of ticket sales.
Wait two years. See if CC is still popular.
Crazy ignorant and costly decision. One player does not make a league. These people are crazy to think the college crowd will follow the WNBA.
Some of them will, initially. CC is the "hottest" thing right now.
Bird and Magic saved the NBA.
“...and been subsidized by the NBA.”
Yes and no. The NBA dropped official financial support of the WNBA in 2005. But since then the NBA has given them around 12 million each year.
Yeah. And LeBron may have killed the NBA.
After all, look how many come out for their victory parades....

You average municipal bus line probably makes more money than the entire WNBA. You gotta make money to pay money.
That’s embarassing.
Caitlin Clark signed a 8-figure contract with Nike, like you said the WNBA has never been profitable, it survives because the NBA subsidizes it, that’s why they have a hard salary cap with structured salaries, all players white and black play under the same contract.
In the next 2 years, Caitlan Clark will probably pocket north of 50 million dollars off the court, what her contract will pay her will be pocket change for her.
Yep. Pele “kick-started” the growth of soccer in the US. The sport probably would have struggled here without him.
How about she can sign with the highest bidder like any other kid leaving college?
The anti American draft is supposedly to increase equity via competitive balance.
When it really reduces equity-just see Heat/Nuggets vs Lakers/Celtics NBA finals and insures the billionaire class’ equity or in Clark’s case, the resat of the WNBA’s place at the subsidy trough.
And this year the Timberwolves are going to be in the Finals.
