Gator hunting in florida
Alligator Hunting in Florida: A Thrilling Experience

Florida is known for its abundant alligator population, with an estimated 1.3 million alligators of every size. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) established an annual statewide recreational alligator harvest opportunity in 1988, which has been recognized as a model program for sustainable use of a renewable natural resource. Here’s what you need to know about gator hunting in Florida:

Types of Alligator Hunts in Florida

Statewide Alligator Hunt Permit:

The statewide alligator hunting season begins on August 15 and ends on November 1. The first four weeks of the season are divided into four quota weeks, and each permit is assigned one of those weeks.

Private Land Alligator Hunts:

You can hunt alligators on private land with a licensed guide or outfitter. These hunts are usually more expensive than the statewide hunt, but offer a more personalized experience.

Night Hunts:

Night hunts for alligators in Florida can be more challenging than day hunts, but offer an adrenaline-packed experience. Spotlights are used to scan lakes and swamps for giant gators, creating an eerie and exciting atmosphere.

Methods of Harvesting Gators

Crossbow, Regular Bow, Gun, Fishing Pole, or Baited Hook: These are the primary methods of harvesting gators in Florida.

Alligator Trapping Agent License:

This license is required for those who want to harvest alligators for commercial purposes.

Tips and Reminders

Alligator Conservation: Alligator conservation is a success story in Florida, with a stable population and sustainable hunting practices.

Florida Resident Persons with Disabilities Hunting and Fishing License: Those with a Florida Resident Persons with Disabilities Hunting and Fishing License are exempt from paying the fee but still need the license to hunt alligators.

Exemptions for Senior Citizens: Exemptions for senior citizens do not apply to alligator trapping agent licenses.
Skinning and Processing Gators: Skinning and processing gators averages $30 per foot, while tanning the hide into leather is about $40 per foot.

Alligator Alley Outfitters: Offers guided alligator hunts in a private game preserve with some of Florida’s top guides.

It is mating season for gators now. Two weeks ago, around 5 am, my rescue puppy needed to go to the bathroom so I went downstairs and opened the screen door to our fenced in yard. In the pitch black darkness, I heard this loud, low and very long growl. I was freaked out as it growled twice more in the darkness. I went back inside and tried to think if I was imagining it. I tried again about a half hour later and my other dog stepped food on the screened in porch, froze and then ran back inside and hid in fear. A very large gator had tried to burrow under the gate to our wood fence, leaving a hole under the gate almost a food deep/wide.

Yeah.... I stop, look and listen now with all the stadium lights around our house on full bright. The amorous gator making the rounds lives in the lake across the street and he is a big ol’ boy.

Yes!

Come and get your own material for the shoes and handbags, no harvesting needed. They're friendlier in the dark. They just walk up to you and will let you pet them.

Don’t do that. That gator would be better off patrolling the Rio Grande for “Newcomers.” Send it to Texas.
