I will admit that this does not at all resonate for me the same way it does for a lot of Germans. I also don’t understand why they get all misty over this.
Well, it would be outrageously effective for the German Conservative party to adopt the song as their party anthem.
Well, it is because it is one of the few songs in the rich repertoire of German song which bridges the gap between folk-song on one side and art-song on the other.
I think one of the few others is „Der Lindenbaum“ by Schubert, to a romantic poem by Wilhelm Müller (1794-1827).
