A new Iranian law that raises the prospect of the death penalty for abortion has been condemned by independent human rights experts, who have declared that is in “clear contravention of international law”.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the experts called on the Iranian authorities to repeal the ‘Youthful Population and Protection of the Family’ law, which was ratified by Iran’s Guardian Council on the first of November.
The law, said the experts, severely restricts access to abortion, contraception, voluntary sterilization services and related information, in direct violation of women’s human rights under international law, and contains a provision stating that if carried out on a large scale, abortion would fall under the crime of “corruption on earth” and carry the death penalty.
“The Iranian Government is taking further steps to use criminal law to restrict the rights of women, for the sake of increasing the number of births, which will effectively force many women and girls to continue unwanted pregnancies to term which would be inherently discriminatory”, the experts declared. Severe restrictions on women’s rights
Abortion in Iran is effectively banned, apart from a few exceptions. The new law puts the final decisions on therapeutic abortion – in case of threat to the life of the pregnant woman or foetal anomalies – in the hands of a panel consisting of a judge, medical doctor and forensic doctor, rather than on the pregnant women, supported by the medical doctor.
For the UN experts, the law violates the rights to life and health, the right to non-discrimination and equality, and to freedom of expression by making it illegal to access a range of reproductive health services and share reproductive rights information.
The law also prohibits free distribution of contraceptive goods, and imposes a ban on voluntary sterilizations for men and women, aside from very exceptional cases. The move, said the experts, will disproportionately impact women in situations of marginalization, and victims of sexual violence. Risk of maternal deaths
In the experts’ view, the law will not stop abortions.
They pointed to data illustrating that “criminalizing the termination of pregnancy does not reduce the number of women who resort to abortion”.
“Instead, it forces women to risk their lives by undergoing clandestine and unsafe procedures.”
According to official data an estimated 300,000 to 600,000 illegal abortions are performed in Iran every year.
Under the law, antenatal screening tests will be restricted, and the health ministry will establish a system to collect information on everyone who goes to a health centre for fertility treatment, pregnancy, delivery, and abortion – a move apparently designed to expand the monitoring of pregnancies and discourage abortions.
“Restricting the access of women to free contraception goods and services will lead to unwanted pregnancies and high maternal mortality”, the experts warned.
“We will closely monitor the impact of this law on maternal deaths and ensure accountability for failure to act with due diligence to prevent the death of women and girls with risk pregnancies, or the death of those that undergo unsafe abortions”, they added. Cruel and degrading
The package of measures contained in the law could, therefore, amount to gender-based violence because women denied safe abortions can incur mental and physical suffering, according to the UN experts.
Moreover, the criminalization of abortion can constitute cruel, degrading, and inhumane treatment, and may amount to torture.
“We urge the Government to immediately repeal the law on ‘Youthful Population and Protection of the Family’ and to take measures to end the criminalization of abortion and to ensure that all women can access all necessary health services, including sexual and reproductive health care, in a manner that is safe, affordable, and consistent with their human rights”, the experts said.
Iranians are protecting women and babies from abortion.
This is why the left hates Iran! One of reasons anyway.
I get it you all don't like them because they are Muslims but can you all come to an understanding that they do have the same values as us?
I wouldn’t say “the same” but it’s a very weird world 🌏🌎🌍 when Iran is pro-life and rejects the homosexual agendas...
AND...
the West is pushing abortion and gay marriage and “transgender” lies...
I wouldn’t want to live under the reign of the mullahs that’s for sure.
Well now that “experts” have weighed in on the matter they can enforce their ruling themselves.
Well, when are the third world UN chimps going to send some of their “rights” enforcers to Iran to straighten it out. ROTFLMAO.
I’d say this.
It’s okay to disagree with Islam
but
Maybe you were lied to about certain things about these people.
after all....the same people who lied about Iran tell lies on Pro Life Christians.
Now am I correct?
Pro Life Christians “hate women” How many times have I posted stuff about that? Pro Life Christians are against “women having rights” Dude I could go on and on.
It’s the same playbook only now with Iran they use Islam and not Catholics/Protestants.
For all their faults IRAN IS PRO LIFE.
Oh, the UN is soooo concerned about not being able to abort babies eh?
How about showing concern about funding the killing and kidnapping of innocent ALREADY BORN babies, children and adults?
I’m conflicted on this issue with Iran, and on this issue only.
Iran protests the human rights of the unborn, and international law says that those humans still in the womb have no rights. That’s inhumane and it’s the people who protect abortion rights who are in the wrong on this issue. Abortion rights should not be any kind of right. When governments pass laws that allow killing of the unborn humans, then, those countries are as inhumane as Hitler was. It’s genocide, which is equal to the genocide perpetrated by Hitler.
Other than that, Iran needs to disappear from the face of the earth, or at least their form of government.
Abortion is the death penalty for the baby who dares to exist.
To be expected. We all know the UN loves to promote abortion on every last square inch of Planet Earth. I chose this article for that reason. Iran is pro life and the UN hates it.
Well, you won’t find me faulting them for protecting the unborn and rejecting the gay agendas.......
“or at least their form of government”
Iranian people are just like all people all over the world. They are really wonderful people. They just want to be free and live their lives.
Their government is like ours, does that tell you anything? Most governments are full of people who’s heads are too big for their bodies. All over the world when forming a government people should do one thing and that is put a term limit on the person in office.
A politician is like a diaper even the best one needs changed often.
Iran has a demographics problem so it makes sense to really restrict abortion and contraception
“clear contravention of international law”
Has anybody ever voted for these so called “international laws”?
It’s getting tougher and tougher deciding which is wotse/better, today’s degenerate, culturally rotted America or the muslims of Iran or Putin’s Russia.
There are tyrannical leaders all over the world!
How about China?
I remember a Benny Hill joke once “Once upon a time there were two China men, now look at how many there are”
They can’t over throw their tyrannical leaders? Come on it’s never that easy.
“It’s getting tougher and tougher deciding which is wotse/better, today’s degenerate, culturally rotted America or the muslims of Iran or Putin’s Russia.”
Perhaps the world is changing
and
Perhaps the world is not what we thought it was. Something in the Bible about “the veil is thinning”
I'm sure the Mullahs in Qom are quaking in their robes. Oh yeah, China Tehran Joe Will take care of them.
That’s hilarious.
Like Iran would even give a Schiff about what the UN thinks when it comes to killing their own citizens. LOL.
