When Merete Muenter tells people that she pays $623 a month for her studio in an affordable housing complex in New York City, many assume the worst: a run-down dump in a crime-ridden neighborhood.
The reality is that her subsidized rental is far nicer than any of the market-rate places she’s lived in previously.
“People … don’t realize that my affordable housing apartment is in a luxury building that has all the amenities that I never dreamed of having, living in midtown Manhattan,” says Muenter. “I have a doorman, elevators, gym, roof terrace, courtyard, even a washer and dryer in my apartment.”
In 2014, this choreographer and director of musical theater landed this windfall by entering an affordable housing lottery. The effect was life-changing.

Exactly!
“Hate the game, not the player.”
Or, going back further, "Don't hate the sinner, hate the sin". Or, "Love the sinner, hate the sin".
Of course, if she's in on this grift, it's possible, or even likely that she's in on a number of other grifts too. It tends to become a way of life. Disability, food stamps, free cell phone, internet, bus pass, etc. So the final version is "Don't hate the grifter, hate the grift"?
gloating is not a good look
i believe al sharpton had six rent controlled apartments
“I’ve never hard of subsidized rentals anywhere else in the US.”
They are all over the place.
California requires developers to sell a certain number of condo units at below market rate. These are set aside for librarians, police, firefighters, teachers, sanitation workers, etc. They are awarded by lottery. The very few lucky people score those units and the liberals get to feel very good about themselves. They tell themselves “We are doing something to make housing affordable” without ever asking about the fairness of it all or whether it can scale up to meet everybody’s needs.
the old, if she can make it there, any body can...
This entitled, smug little wench got lucky in a lottery to obtain subsidized housing far below market value, and she’s claiming that this proves that housing costs for normal people haven’t skyrocketed? That everything we’ve been told about affordable housing is wrong?
She has everything I’d never want. We are thrilled to death living in the sticks as rugged individuals with freedoms New Yorkers never had and never will have.
“choreographer and director of musical theater”
WHEW. And I thought she might have a useless job....
I will howl with delight if she is kicked out and her “luxury” apartment is given to illegal aliens.
nope!
she has free choice and she chooses to mooch off the public instead of being a responsible grown up.
players still gotta answer to God. I doubt He will blame the system. He gave each individual free choice to choose what is right or not.
Clue: mooching off of other people (the govt “system” subsidized by taxpayers money) isn’t right.
“she has free choice and she chooses to mooch off the public instead of being a responsible grown up.”
She is a responsible grownup. Toured with productions in Europe and Japan. Now assistant choreographer for major Broadway production.
