I have only heard recorded performances, some of which sounded like virtuoso piano works.

I’ve seen a handful of excellent players. Actually, Bruce Hornsby played on one of his tunes, including during live performance years ago, I think it’s “The Red Plains”. I saw him do it the first time I saw him years ago, but, uh, disclaimer because of failing memory. :^o
