In the coming days Israel will have to make historic policy decisions, ones that could shape its fate and the fate of the entire region for generations to come. Unfortunately, Benjamin Netanyahu and his political partners have repeatedly proven that they are unfit to make such decisions. The policies they pursued for many years have brought Israel to the brink of destruction. So far, they have shown no regret for their past mistakes, and no inclination to change direction. If they continue to shape policy, they will lead us and the whole Middle East to perdition. Instead of rushing into a new war with Iran, we should first learn the lessons of Israel's failures over the past six months of war.

It’s hard to evaluate a leader in his own time. The things a leader does resonate for decades or even centuries having second and third order effects that were never predicted. Take Chruchill, who had smashing successes and a long string of mistakes. In his own time, you could focus in on anything he did, good or bad and make the case that he was effective or ineffective, or, even in the case of the famine in India, downright evil. But he was the leader, and he did great things...and bad things. It’s the same with Netanyahu. The thing is, he is the leader. And he needs everyone’s support. There used to be something called the loyal opposition. Republicans supported Roosevelt’s policies even while they worked towards their vision of what should be policy. It’s the give and take, the working out of compromise that the world so sorely lacks today.
Maybe Bibi has fought all the war he’s been allowed to fight.
