I heard the Romans used their short swords to thrust into their opponents which gave a more grevious wound to their enemies. Slicing attacks may not work as fast. That’s what I heard- I’m not an expert nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn last night.

The Romans apparently were effective with their gladiae (plural of gladius) but they didn't have to deal with the two-handed Katana, wielded by psychotic Samurai. I'd bet their cute little short swords would be a bit deficient in reach.
