What is European sense. Teaching in NYC schools I’ve worked with Jews for 30 years. Mostly East European. They are 5 shades whiter than my Calabrese skin. Are Southern Italians white? Sicikians? Maltese?

It’s the same kind of cultural distinctiveness that all of us make. It just so happens theirs is that they can’t be white, because they are Jewish.

They same how you can have black skin, but not be considered black by the American black community because they aren’t American.

Not in a northern European way... Mediterraneans usually have more of an olive complexion as do the Jewish, being Mediterraneans and all. Italians and Spaniard's are also not lilly white by any means.

“White” is a short hand for European people, just like “black”is a shorthand for Aftican people. There are extremely dark skinned people from Southern India: no one would say they are “black” because they are not African.

The Jews are a Middle Eastern tribe, like the Arabs. They border Egypt, too.

They aren’t a European people, though they lived in Europe for centuries. Thus they aren’t “white”.

Many north Asians are extremely white. Porcelin white. No one says a very light complexioned Chinese person is “white”.
