St. Augustine approves the HGTV 2024 Dream Home, despite seawall permitting concerns

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The HGTV 2024 Dream Home on Anastasia Island has been a controversial issue in St. Augustine because a seawall was built without the city’s approval, without permits.

Coastal Getaway’s home is part of a contest where people enter for a chance to win the three-bedroom, four bath, $2 million, 3,300 square foot home on Pelican Reef Drive. The winner gets the home fully furnished, a new Mercedes-Benz and $100,000 cash.

The contest ended February 15, but a winner has not been announced due to the unpermitted work done on the house. The house was built with a rocky bulkhead and was too close to a creek and salt marsh.

On Tuesday, the St. Augustine Planning and Zoning Board approved the home since the builder made modifications to the property to address stormwater runoff into the marsh. Board members expressed concern about approving the bulkhead after the fact, and what kind of precedent that might set for future development.

But, the board voted 5-1 to approve it. No word yet on when a winner will be announced.

It looks like the solution might have been to dump some rocks around a couple edges. Very robust and durable, I’m sure. Or simple to remove.

I didn’t enter the contest because the house did not come with a bocce court. But after looking at that picture, maybe I should have.

If you can buy your way out of a problem, you don’t have a problem. As Bongino says, the job of government is to say NO and make you grovel. That’s the point of much of the permitting system anyway.

A good nor’easter would probably bring that water at bottom right a little too high to suit me. 😏

When I saw the headline my first thought was to wonder why a Church Father would have an opinion on a 2024 house.

In hurricanes Erin and Opal in the 90’s we had 15 ft Tidal Surges.

Hurricane Michael in 2018 Wiped most of Mexico Beach homes off the map. Nothing was left but the concrete slab......................................

So, in the past these houses sat on leased land, the way HGTV dream houses in the past have? So the winner has to pay some yearly fee even though they outright own the house. Is that the case on this one as well?

What good is it to win a Coastal Getaway’s home if you can’t pay the taxes on the prize worth.

Yeah I remember Michael....our church sent teams to Mexico Beach for a long time.

Mostly to build sheds for people to store whatever personal belongings they were able to salvage.

That’s why the winner can opt for a cash prize instead.

There were pine trees 2 feet in diameter snapped off at about 15 feet above ground like a giant lawnmower had gone through and mowed everything down.

One of my sisters and my wife’s cousin live in the area. We went three days after the storm on our motorcycles to check on them. I have never seen such damage and I’ve been through 5 other hurricanes and many tropical storms.................

Yeah I’ve seen pine trees snapped like that. Just goes to show how deep the tap root goes....best thing for ‘em IMO.

Sap and pine cone/pine needle dropping useless trees if you ask me.

“bugs, bugs and more bugs”

Oh yeah, I can tell whoever designed that home isn’t aware of that either.....not nearly enough screened in outdoor area.

Old folks used to say pine trees ‘draw lightning’.

I didn’t believe it.

I do now..................
