Where do you go if you are not at school, work or home? For some, the answer is, well, nowhere. With the growing cost of living, the prevalence of social media and the residual social-distancing mentality from the pandemic years, third places, or locations designed for socialization, have largely disappeared.

Used to be so many. Sadly now it's just too expensive to maintain non-commercially productive space. There will always be The Harvard Club and Winged Foot, but how many others can afford a space at The Club?

The left’s MADD war against drinking and driving was partly driven by immigration because of the incredible completely out of control blind drunk driving that came with the Mexicans, but it also wiped out socializing in America, at dear cost.

For thousands of years alcohol lubricated and maintained social contact among the Western peoples and of course America, but now dinner parties, barbecues, picnics, aren’t the bonding events they used to be and are even dying out to a degree.

I have perused Instagram over the last year, just as an observation. From reading comments there I have determined there are VERY few people I want to engage with. The anonymity of the Internet has allowed people to show their true colors. People are mean, hateful, and downright nasty when the risk of a punch in the nose is removed. FR is basically an echo chamber, and there are a few schmucks here as well. I no longer need a local tavern or club.

I think a lot of the rhetoric surrounding the earlier Prohibition movement (leading to the 18th amendment) was about immigrant men getting drunk in saloons.

So we're not supposed to notice that when a particularly nasty case of DUI (e.g. driver driving on wrong side of the freeway, driver going excessively fast) the driver's last name tends to be Gonzalez or Morales?

MADD is getting MADDer and wants the legal limit to go from 0.1 to 0.08 to 0.05. If they ever get it to 0.05, they'll get some study to say it should be 0.02.

No more meeting friends at a sports bar or even having just one glass of wine or bottle of beer with dinner.

Meanwhile those folks from countries with diverse ethical standards and driving proficiency will give MADD ever more reasons to push America towards complete prohibition.

And that worked out sooo well last time we did it.

Possibly, but I do know that since at least the 80s you could guess the nationality of the most public wildest and totally out of control drunk driving violators in the newspaper articles as being Hispanic, and you would be correct in the majority of cases.

My real point though is MADD and their excesses, they didn’t go after the crazy wild drunk drivers, the fought for zero alcohol, first .8, then .5, and whatever they could get.

The loss in socializing and community and people having fun with each other, making friends, and building relationships may not have been worth the cost.
