They probably comped the media a crap-ton of tickets and counted that as paid attendance.

In all actuality, not very many. If tickets cost $20 then the average three day person count per theater would be just north of 56. That's not even 20 people per day and distribute that through the number of showings per day. Let's say four showings per day so there were four or five people at each viewing.
