I tried to respond to an article that sought to defend Gen Z issues partly by arguing that.

One problem with people in our generation is doing something that we dislike and have no passion for. Many young people feel pressured by their parents or others to get a well-paying job. These jobs include doctor, lawyer, engineer, nurse, and many others. They force themselves to enjoy it because of salaries. Even the highly-paid jobs aren’t enough to make a living.

But a problem with doing what others want you to do is that you don’t think about yourself and what you like. Instead, you’re stuck with a job that you hate

My response which the software would not allow was,

The attempt to defend Gen Z actually is an indictment of overall selfishness (and that it is parents) relative to historical ones, notably the so-called "Greatest Generation."

Meaning that its dislike of work is blamed on "doing what others want you to do is that you don’t think about yourself and what you like." forcing themselves to obtain work that they have no passion for because of salaries, and complain even the highly-paid jobs aren’t enough to "make a living.'

Yet in the past people appreciated just having a job, and were frugal in order to survive, and had children they often did not plan for or could afford without sacrifice on the part of the whole.

Which meant appreciating what you had, while learning to share and survive, and deal with relationships (and endure conflicts) and sacrifice for the common good. Yet there was more freedom to do so.

My dad and brothers and sisters went thru the depression, and he and his friends converted a gas engine into a diesel (don't ask me how), built their own trailer and lived out of it while they went to welding school (and later taught my younger brother to do so), and later fought in WW2, then was married, and raised 5 children in a stable family (weekly church, chores - and later 0.15 cents allowance - and good home-cooked meals together and outside play, but no swearing, nor soap operas, and very limited entertainment, mainly on a small B+W TV with rabbit ears - and a little spanking) all of which are productive citizens with many found memories, thank God.

At age 14, I was told to either get a job or work that summer on the small area we owned. I choose the paid route at a local dairy, with my first task cleaning the rest room. Worked there about 18 years, and never asked for a raise. (Until called me into working to save souls without solicitation or gov. welfare, thank God).

Which era has overall resulted in the highest standard of living known to man. "Poverty" now means having things previous generations did not even dream of, and with multiple and often overlapping sources of welfare (I have lived in a low-income city - by choice - for years) sometimes worrying you did not have enough money for the food you feel you need.

However, affliction and adversity are only two tests of character, both of a person and a nation with affluence being the test that few pass, as with the Greatest Generation" and which America is exampling.

Thus progressively loosing aspects of character essential for any nation, which is formed in families and the local culture and that of the nation.

Resulting in increasing moral confusion, and insecurity and lack of purpose and direction, and lack of gratitude, with instability within (and wanton violence). and from without.

But God/Christ does not change, nor man's ability to make choices, with consequences, varying in scope and degree, for time and for eternity.

Some of this is feel good BS for us older people.

I retired early from my profession after 31.5 years 7 years ago. I was only in my mid-50s and I searched for a part time/temporary job and couldn’t even get but 1 interview. And I was looking for entry level jobs etc. I ended up doing my own little part time business as I just simply gave up. (and I’m college educated).

What truths are in this piece are countered by a very real age discrimination culture that exists.

That’s my experience.

We have four kids, two millenials and two Gen Z. All are independent, well adjusted and very gainfully employed. The Z’s are an Aerospace engineer and a professional trucker.

All four are single, but the oldest got a nice new rock on her finger last week.

All were home educated in a Christian home. Both of those are likely huge factors in their lives.

All are conservative and attend church as well as giving time to various ministries. Again, that comes from their upbringing because they saw us do the same.

More like 24/7 propaganda.

The ones I've seen are mostly uneducated, entitled miscreants.

Interesting about the struggling with eye contact thing...

That might be a cultural issue.

Note to employers: Have you tried interviewing American citizens?

Just a thought.

In April of 2020 shortly after we went to work from home for the “two weeks”, I was written up for calling covid the China virus. Which is exactly what our president had called it.

That was the day I quiet quit, and a little over a year later I retired.

These have been the best years of my life so far. I’ll never go back to that cubicle farm workforce. Even if it is work from home.

It’s no surprise Gen Z kids are poor at interviews. They can’t look up from their phones long enough to make eye contact and provide a coherent response.

Gen Z is most likely to self-diagnose a mental disease or Autism which requires accommodations. They were pampered at home and expect the same at work.

Look how short a time the Greatest Generation were in the work force and how long they have been retired. Shortest and longest periods for each respectively of them all.

This is an interesting graph that can be studied a lot. I wonder just how accurate it is? It would be more interesting if the Y axis was actual numbers in the group instead of being apparently dimensionless.

Don’t ask questions (36%)

Good indicator of a company that you dont really want to work for.

Look, no one is yet hiring a GenZ to lead an engineering department or putting one in charge of reattempting multimillion projects that have previously failed where detailed questions about the task are important to understand before taking the job.

“Hamburger Flipper” entails flipping the *$)@*&$ hamburger. If you are worthy of hiring then you should understand that without further questions. If you, as a GenZ, feel you have deep meaningful questions about the diversity ratios represented in the company management before taking the job then you are the one I dont want to hire because it leads to the other problems.

“Mmm, OK. But what about the origin story of the founder of this organization? Was she escaping oppression?”

“It doesnt make a difference. You are the janitor. Get to mopping or find work elsewhere.”

If your GenZ employees are quitting because they “didnt ask enough questions” to understand that in your organization a “hamburger flipper” needs to do rectal exams on living cattle then maybe the problem is the management of the company.

As surprising as it sounds, Ive run into this more than once. “We just cant find anyone to stay in this job.” “I have an idea, had you considered not lying to applicants?”

Most things can be trained out of them, except for their biggest problem, fear.

They are terrified of making decisions. Tiny decisions. Like should the post-its be blue or orange decisions.

I can teach them how to do a job. I can not teach them how to be brave enough to to it.

My sister has three decades of HR responsibilities in corporate level industries. I asked her if this story seemed accurate to her from her experience.

This is what she said:

Yes this is absolutely accurate. Poor work ethic, easily offended, a deep seated belief that the workplace should change to accommodate them rather than the other way around, bring emotional problems to work, unreliable when deadlines bring increased pressure or stress…potentially the worst generation of adults the US has seen.

We are seeing the results now of kids being taught that there are no winners or losers - every kid gets a prize.

Life is not like that.

Most of us learned that at school. These young people are having to learn it the hard way.

Also,

Seventy-one percent of young people are ineligible to join the military, according to 2017 Pentagon data. You can much blame that on the demise of Biblical Christian faith when tested by prosperity and the massive numbers of abortion, coupled with contraception and work outside the homestead for women, which significantly decreased birth rate, esp. among the demographic most likely to enlist, and has decreased more in the recent past, with the % per pop. size of military being half of what it once was:

Millennial women are having babies at a slower rate than any previous generation of women in American history. Between the year 2007 and 2012, the rate at which African American women in their 20s had children dropped by 14 percent. The rate at which Caucasian American women in their 20s had children dropped by 11 percent. The rate at which Hispanic American women in their 20s had children dropped by an astounding 26 percent. - https://defendernetwork.com/lead-story/intelligent-reasons-millennials-arent-kids/

there was a time—1850 to be precise—when huge households, chock full of tykes, were common and considered “right.” US Census data from 1850 show that families with six to nine kids were common.... the culture dictated that a woman’s place was in the home, and her fulfillment was found there, where she served her husband and raised her children. In his 1983 book Family and Divorce in California, 1850-1890, University of Oklahoma historian Robert Griswold cited an article published in the San Mateo Gazette in the mid-19th century that states, “Woman is set in the household and man is sent out into the world.”

..Family size in the US peaked between 1860 and 1920 because infant mortality rates were declining while large families were still valued, according to Northern Kentucky University sociologist Joan Ferrante’s 1992 book Sociology: A Global Perspective. Even a woman of modest means could “be happy in the love of her husband, her home, and its beautiful duties without asking the world for its smiles and favors,” the article argued... Women, Ferrante writes, “The mother’s median age at the time of her last child’s birth was 40 in 1850; by 1940 it had fallen to 27.3.” ..
