‘Severe’ geomagnetic storm conditions impacting Earth, NOAA says

A major geomagnetic storm is impacting Earth, the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) said Sunday afternoon. The U.S., however, may not see the aurora commonly associated with such celestial events.

Saturday, the SWPC issued geomagnetic storm watches through Monday as a coronal mass ejection was on track to impact Earth. At the time, the agency said the geomagnetic storms could reach G2 “moderate” and G3 “strong” strength.

However, on Sunday, the SWPC warned that the storm had reached “severe” G4 conditions. Those conditions could change into Monday, the agency said in a Sunday evening update.

...

The SWPC noted Sunday afternoon that geomagnetic storming reaching G4 conditions had been reported. In a newer update, the agency said levels “to at least G3” are expected through Sunday evening.

The G4 storming observed Sunday is considered “severe,” the SWPC notes, saying a storm of this caliber is “a major disturbance in Earth’s magnetic field; often varying intensity between lower levels and severe storm conditions over the course of the event.” As alarming as it may sound, the agency is advising otherwise.

The public should not anticipate adverse impacts and no action is necessary, ... “infrastructure operators have been notified to take action to mitigate any possible impacts.”

No wonder my cat bit me and my watch is running clockwise. I thought it was the effing climate change. Now the damn cat is singing opera. This hasn’t happened since I quit smoking dope soaked in tide detergent. /s

The Fox news internet feed to my local radio station was trashed at 1200 MDT today. A few minutes later, I learned about the current storm. It was at Kp 8. No surprise that it was trashing network connections. By 1500 MDT, the network connections were flawless again.

There was a lot of noise on the VHF (2m) radio band tonite.
The UHF (70cm) band was clear, tho.
Most of the HF bands are closed.

The weekly 2m net for the Pocatello Amateur Radio club was unaffected this evening. I decided against using my FT-991A for FT8 today. Lots of reports of poor propagation. Hopefully better later in the week. We have the first hints of T storms as well. I pull all the antennas when those are rolling through.

When the ground thaws and I'm recovered from upcoming surgeries, I have a Zero5 27' vertical to install. I didn't build out the DX Commander this Winter as I had 2 feet of snow most of the Winter. The offset dipole with a 4:1 balun and a 55/11 split of dipole leads has functioned smoothly from 40m to 10m for the last few months. A Bonnie Crystal ALE broadband terminated dipole will go up in mid-Summer. That one awaits the roof replacement after the Spring rain stops.

"However, the radar is also picking up a bunch of inbound Russian ICBMs, so I wouldn't sweat the coronal mass ejection..."

In other news...

The Food and Drug Administration has announced that saliva causes stomach cancer. However, only when swallowed in small amounts over a long period of time.

Hippy Dippy Weatherman is more accurate than most of these "Government experts".

SolarHam.com launched on March 15, 2006 with the purpose of providing real time Space Weather news and data from various sources, all in one location for easy navigation. The site was created and is still maintained solely by amateur (HAM) radio station Kevin VE3EN.
