My Daughter Let It Slip That She Expects Me to Buy Her a House. What?
Slate ^ | March 20, 2024 | Kristin Wong [advice columnist]

Dear Pay Dirt,

I love my husband but he comes from a very wealthy family, whereas I raised my kids on a modest salary as a single mom. I had to sign a prenup when we got married and even if he dies before me, I will not be inheriting millions. He has been very generous with my two adult children, taking them on expensive vacations and such.

This I why my daughter’s behavior is such a shock. She, her husband, and their two girls live in a very expensive area and rent. They refuse to consider relocating based on their political opinions. My daughter called me to complain yet again about her living situation and then proceeded to berate me for not convincing my husband to go ahead already and buy her a house. She was “sick” of how we were flaunting our lifestyle in her face and said I needed to do more as her mother. We haven’t really spoken since and the thought of having this conversation makes me physically ill. I worked two jobs to give my children the best start in life. They graduated with no college debt and I was able to help pay for both of their weddings (this was before I met my husband). I haven’t spoken to my husband about my daughter’s demands because I know it will sour their relationship. What do I do here?

Dear Abby, dear Abby
My feet are too long
My hair’s falling out and my rights are all wrong
My friends they all tell me that I’ve no friends at all
Won’t you write me a letter, won’t you give me a call?
Siiiigggnned bewildered

Bewildered, bewildered
You have no complaint
You are what your are and you ain’t what you ain’t
So listen up buster, and listen up good
Stop wishing for bad luck and knocking on wood

Excerpt from Dear Abby, John Prine

I would disagree. As long as the child makes the most of his opportunity, a parent should help him go as far as he can. My willingness to help is, of course, dependent on that. If they are wasting my time, then my help is a waste of time. Otherwise, it’s better I think to help as far as they can.

A prenup that keeps a dad flush with wealth while his wife and kids are relatively poor seems to be the source of the problem here.

Daughter is similarly an entitled snot, but also looking for proof of love from her father who is withholding so much.

Pretty ugly all around. IMO the wife was in the wrong for agreeing to such a prenup before marriage. It may have been a deal that she thought was worth it to her, but it set her kids up for an emotionally troubled dynamic coupled with a poor role model. Yuck!

Tell her you'll buy her a house in Peoria, Illinois.

I bet you a million bucks that she'll reject the offer.

There are a lot of houses out there. But you may not want to live in that town. There are a lot of small towns in America. But they're kind of boring.

Your mileage may vary but by providing for them after they become s as faults you’re prolonging adolescence and a sense of entitlement.

As I said, it all depends on what they are doing with the help I give. I’m not giving so they can party. I’m giving so they can focus on what they need to do to accomplish their goals.

Yeah, maybe. About 10% of kids will excel with the worst drunken abusive parents imaginable. About 10% will turn out as human trash despite loving parents who raise them in ever correct manner.

That leaves the 80% in the middle that parents can indeed influence.

“Kids that want your money usually want you dead. Those kind balance the cash against your time in senior care. They get the cheapest, drug pushing facility and expedite your death”

I’ve seen it happen.

He married her. It’s not his job to support her adult children at all. Especially when they are entitled, leftist, and live in expensive areas for political reasons.

The hell with that.

“Pretty ugly all around. IMO the wife was in the wrong for agreeing to such a prenup before marriage.”

So she was supposed to counter and say she wants full access to his fortune and that same access for her daughters?
Do you have ANY idea how common it is for such women to stay a few years then bail with half his cash?
If he did not have a prenup women would line up to strip mine him.

Indeed they do. And taking it further, ‘single’ suggests never married, whereas ‘divorced’ does. But knowing human nature and having experienced the female of our species in the context of marriage a couple of times, I would not expect one who initiated the divorce to identify herself as ‘divorced’, as it implies, subtly, that her husband divorced her. Thus, ‘single’ could easily mean ‘never married’ or ‘I divorced him’... Sigh...

the parent does not owe a house

For sure. There is a risk of perpetuating a state of dependency, and this woman's daughter does sound like she's already dependent (flip side of entitled) in her own mind.

I have a cousin like this. Her sister is worth millions, and lets her live totally free in a house worth over $500k in a very desirable location. Why does the sister do this? Because the dependent one was the apple of mom's eye, the youngest child, the one who was welcome to live home with mom & dad all her life. She became dependent until her parents were dying in their late 80's, at which time they told the rich daughter, "look after your sister, as we did." Dependency was cultivated in her. She isn't disabled or mentally deficient. She's single and always will be, because her parents and her sister think she can't make it on her own...and now in her 50's, she can't -- she's incurably dependent. They wove a narrative and they all believe it.

And in another case, I know a man in his 50's who thinks his half-sister in her 40's is too dumb to be allowed to have a social life. "Any man she met would take advantage of her!" So he takes advantage of her. She's the housekeeper, fully convinced that's all she can be.

So it may be lovely to have someone up and give you a house, but sometimes it's not good for your character -- or theirs.

If you look around, you see it. Parents that are classic good and stable parents have kids that become addicts, strippers, criminals, murderers, drunks, perverts democrats, you name it.
The best parent in the world can get a Hunter Biden.

Conversely, the meanest foul mouthed violent drunk dad or slutty mom who lives in squalor sometimes has a kid that looks at them and decides they don’t want THAT, and they go to college or find a job, they work hard and own half the town and the respect of the community.

It’s often dramatic and amazing.

She should tell her daughter that she provided her with a college education so she could provide for herself

Best advice yet.
