New research has found that putting a smiley face emoji on a bill can bolster the average restaurant server’s tip by a whopping 11%, according to a study published last month in the International Journal of Hospitality Management.
“We establish that when emojis are included with tip suggestions during the payment transaction, customers tip at a higher percentage than when no emojis are included,” the authors state. Specifically, the largest increase in customer generosity came in scenarios where multiple emojis were shown with suggested tip amounts. Neutral faces accompanied lower gratuities and, as the recommended percentage grew, so did the emojis’ cheek-to-cheek smile.
At full-service restaurants, the presence of emojis saw rises in the average tip go from 22.86% to 25.38% — an overall 11% relative increase. Typically, a 18%-to-20% gratuity represents satisfaction.

For the soft headed.
That’s almost exactly how I cook ribeye steaks.
I’ve noticed the bill often has tips suggested for 15, 18, and 20%.
Most base their suggestions on the food total. Lately, many are suggesting a tip calculated on the total including sales tax, inflating the tip.
My SO and I regularly patronized a restaurant during the COVID lock-downs. Every week, we would have dinner there. Through the renovation. Through the various scares.
The COVID panic subsided. The two of us arrived at our usual time. To be greeted with "You smell, don't come back." I still don't understand the guy's problem.
So, we didn't. That was $60-80 a week that wasn't going to them. It adds up.
When Silicon Valley Bank happened, I started buying gold and silver. I now have a nice kitty for when the dollar and the banks both crash. And all because I didn't throw the cash away on "the experience." Who knew?
An even better and more effective trick... would be to actually provide good, fast, efficient service. What a novel concept in this day and age.
Went to a local restaurant yesterday for the first time since our a-hole governor shut everything down during covid. Our waitress was one we recognized. I tipped lavishly, as her life was probably crap during the shutdown.
Yes, that is the recipe, but how well did you tip?!?
...they also include the sales tax as the base price for the tip. As it is, as long as waiters are paid a ‘living wage’ they no longer get tips from me, since they already have enough to live on (by definition), which is NOT the case for many, if not most, other workers.
Waitresses at Waffle House are notorious for talking to each other in front of patrons about how their babies are going to starve if they don’t get better tips. After falling for it the first time and hearing it again I quit eating there.
What no lobster tails?
Actually given that this ignores how inflation has driven up the underlying restaurant tab, tips are going up even more than 11%, more like 11% plus inflation.
Try pecan crusted fish. Grind the nuts and mix with some flour
I use hickory nuts. Just soak them overnight and use them the next day. Everytime I stoak the fire throw in a few. Works great in a smoker
I’ve lowered my tip amount to 15% or so. Restaurant prices lead inflation numbers. I lower it further if I’m required to use a QR code or tablet to pay.
The correct term here would be “an illustration of a smiley face”. “Emoji” refers to characters typed on a computer, “ji” being Japanese for “character”, as in alphabet character.
These young writers are so stupid.
That sounds delicious. How thick are the cuts? What is the cost per pound? Any info would help me in my quest for delicious steakdom...
Word of advice: My brother-in-law, retired and reclusive five states over to the west after my sister passed away suddenly, was regularly talking about buying gold and “solids (coins ?) “.
But, he was also on a limited income, so I don’t know whether ever bought either. Or, if he did, whether he put it in a bank vault, a safety deposit box, his fireplace hearth, or in a pipe undrr his swimming pool.
We just dont know.
Regardless. He did pass away suddenly. His gold, if any at all?
No one knows.
If you have solid money, tell somebody where it is.
Do you leave on counter for 6 hours? (I have heard room temp is best for cooking steaks).
Amazing you should say that. A week or so ago our local butcher scored some fresh rainbow trout from his guy. I love trout and rarely get to have it. I ran over to his shop, and bought two filets. We made pecan crusted trout that night for dinner. Better than any I’ve had in any restaurant, bar none.
