What started as an escape for college swimmers has evolved into a debaucherous party. But after recent crackdowns, some Florida cities may be "breaking up" with the popular pastime. It's the season for raucous rites of spring revelry in the US state of Florida. But spring break may be getting toned down this year in the state that birthed the popular American pastime, if local crackdowns have anything to do with it.
Traditionally, spring break – a week-long period when many American universities close and students descend on warm-weather beaches across the US to relax and party – falls between late February to mid-April. But former Fort Lauderdale resident Mike Houser said signs of the bacchanalian event's arrival in the beach town just north of Miami began to materialise by the third week of February this year. Bare-chested and bikini-clad they come, clutching insulated cups of frosty libations and rolling like tumbleweeds down the city's sandy stretches and city streets.
"The beaches are already packed, the restaurants. Everywhere is slammed," said Houser, who recently moved to Tampa. "I don't live near the beach but I noticed it first at my local Publix," he said, referring to the Florida-based supermarket chain. "From 09:00 to 22:00 at night, it's kids going in there buying cases of White Claw."

Boys will be boys. And girls just wanna have fun. So give them a week off from their responsibilities to bask in the sun, with lots of alcohol and some drugs…. It’s a recipe for disaster!!!!!!!
And some great music
When spring break in Fort Lauderdale started to look like Friday night in Chicago, that’s when it changed dramatically.
Ah,the annual Virginia Beach bathing beauty contest... ;)
BIPOC. If they must know.
The Spring Breaks were invaded by mutant octopi descending into the street crowds like dark monsters with arms punching, thrashing and swinging people into the pavement. They were fueled with drugs and plenty of alcohol. The terror of screams and shock rang through the civil order of the night.
The Battle of the Weaves!
I grew up in Fort Lauderdale.
At best, the city tolerated Spring Breakers. Every couple of years there would be a push to “end” Spring Break and they would crack down on drinking in public, capacity caps at local drinking establishments, public indecency, stuff like that.
It would get quiet for a while and then, slowly, the students would come back.
My friends who still live there say it is much more...urban than it used to be. A lot more violent as well.
I saw The Police on one of their first American tours at Summer’s on the Beach when I was 16. I was not impressed at the time. They had so few songs in their playlist they played some of them multiple times.
I learned much of the female anatomy from wet t-shirt contests held at the various bars. I learned that the Elbo Room, while famous, was boring. I learned to stay away from The Poop Deck.
I’m glad I got the Spring Break experience of the 1970’s and 1980’s. I don’t think they can have such a thing in today’s world any more.
Being retired, every week is spring break 🤣🤣🤣
Thousands of kids. No repercussions if they do stupid stuff and are arrested. Why risk it?
is it black folk? Just the loud obnoxious ones?
I live in a college town and they shutdown the unofficial Saint Patricks Day celebration some 20 years ago. Saint Patricks day falls during spring break, so the bar owners came up with unofficial Saint Patrick day to make some money. Over the years the conduct got worse. Students were blowing off classes in large numbers and lots of students getting hammered before noon. There would be a student or 2 fall off a balcony or sent to the hospital with alcohol poisoning.
The $$ cost is greater than the $$ revenue received
Spring Break is more trouble than it is worth
Because it changed color.
You Belong To The City by Glenn Fry is great.
Jan Hammer, Phil Collins, INXS, Laura Brannigan, The Tubes…
The people who made America great didn’t
do things like spring break.
That eye candy might be the confused.
We were camping with friends when some gals rode by on their bicycles. The guys whistled at them, the gals said hi back and Mr. b couldn’t run to hide behind me fast enough. That earned him a permanent hall pass.
Make sure you know it’s really Spring Break and not something else. This week is Spring Break in Austin, TX (the Berkeley of the South). Next week is Pride Week.
It helps that you’re sane, and an adult.
As a longtime (former) resident of Florida, we thank you for your patronage 😎
