Butyrate comes from soluble fiber being converted in the intestine by bacteria.

It helps cells in the colon, disrupts colon cancer cells still capable of self-destruction (apoptosis), and helps the rest of the body, once in the bloodstream.

And here I’ve thought for 80 years that butyrate was a kind of lacquer used on fabric-covered airplanes.

On IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)
By Davis W. Lamson, ND

The AARP Bulletin of December 2023 contains a creditable article, “Why Do I Have IBS” by Hallie Levine.

Without actually saying so, the article points out that the name “IBS” doesn’t really explain anything. Like most medical diagnoses, it’s just a description of the discomfort occurring.

In the case of IBS, there can be many potential causes and a few deserve more detailed explanation. Further if one pins down the real cause and treats that, a lot of time can be saved from experimenting with this and that.

The gut “microbiome” bacterial collection is important to being healthy all over. Disturbance there deserves a full stool culture to see “who is home.” Most physicians seem not to order a full culture, but prefer to hunt for one or two bad actors. The whole picture can be more helpful.
It is true that many of our major intestinal bacterial inhabitants do not culture well, but a full culture may settle the initial point of whether discomfort is from particular bacteria or fungi.

Food sensitivities or even allergy can be a major health issue. Food is our greatest environmental exposure and everyone, being genetically different, does not get along on the same foods.
Testing the level of food protein antibodies is easy and can be helpful, but all such tests are not the same. It’s claimed that three years is a generation of such testing. Some labs seem to be 20 years out of date.

Butyric acid is the major fuel for the lining of the large intestine. Butyrate also seems to have a rebalancing effect on the intestinal bacteria. Most of us seem to make enough by action of the right gut bacteria on fiber in the diet. In gut distress without identifiable cause, extra butyrate can be very helpful. This physician believes in only one very superior product, ProButyrate by Tesseract, carried in the Tahoma Clinic Dispensary.
