You should probably have a "Go Bag" for each one of your family members - including the family pets (including food and water bowls).
You should have water for each member
Food and snacks for each member
At least one change of clothes, including socks and underwear
Have a paper hard map for egress routes, preferably avoiding any possible compromised routes over water ways and bridges.
A compass is always handy to have available
Anticipate any roadway problems, which includes prior examples of traffic jams, a limited number of refueling stations and service areas (bathroom stops).
Have a charged cellphone and re-charging cord adapter suitable for vehicles
Cash and/or credit cards - but remember that if power is not available or cut,.."cash is king" even during an outage
If staying with friends, call ahead to make sure that you are welcome, and that there is availability;
and let those friends know of your intended route.
Anticipate traffic congestion as many others may think like you have, to vacate the area.
Always try to have enough fuel for travel; try to keep fuel at half tank full, since you don't know conditions ahead.
