Get ready to pay $40 for a martini
Business Insider ^ | 2/29/24 | Kelsey Vlamis

-Martinis costing anywhere from $30 to $150 are popping up in places like New York and San Francisco.

-The maximalist martinis encapsulate "loud luxury."

-Loud luxury, in contrast to "quiet luxury," is about spending a lot and owning it.

Martinis are having a moment — so, naturally, that means someone has to start charging exorbitant prices for them.

Enter: The $40 martini.

Recent stories from Eater SF and Punch have dug into the rise of "maximalist" martinis popping up in cities such as San Francisco and New York at wildly high prices.

In Manhattan, there's a $45 citrus martini at Ilis and a $34 martini at Monkey Bar. Across the country, in San Francisco, you can find a $150 martini at Empress by Boon, and in Miami a $55 martini at Cote.

I’ll have a diet coke with lots of ice and a slice of lime, por favor.

I don’t drink anymore, but paying the full price of a whole bottle of Vodka at a bar for just 1 martini drink? Nope!

I had a total of two beers last year. It wouldn’t bother me in the slightest to go to zero alcohol.

Haven’t had any alcohol since I was diagnosed the Type II diabetes over 25 years ago. I did enjoy a Bloody Mary, or Margarita before dinner when I ate out.

Smart idea. I like it.
Why dine out? Go to best neighbors house and eat for less. Only tips allowed.

This is what the younger generation calls a “flex” as in to flex in poors. It’s no different than then you buy a bottle of liquor at the night club for $800 or more and they come out with the bottle and sparklers shooting flames too the sky so every one sees that your private table spent that amount. It also signals all the younger females you have the disposable income to spoil them in exchange for their uh time.

That said the best Manhattan cocktail I have ever had was on the rooftop bar of the Hudson hotel overlooking central park. It was made with whistle pig rye 18yo and was worth every penny of the $60 it cost for a double pour. Hand crafted cocktails in Manhattan island are already going to always be in the $20 to $35 range that’s just the price point of The City.

Grrr autocorrect...

“Flex on poor’s”

Having a ten thousand dollar Rolex and wearing it with a t-shirt and flip flops is also a “flex” but that’s a quiet flex vs the loud flex

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Loud luxury is just the new way of saying conspicuous consumption.

Back in the day, I used to enjoy a good vodka martini, that is, just wave the vermouth cork over it and two olives. Clean and simple.

Bought my son-in-law and I myself a martini each at a Cheesecake Factory [...]

Time to revive the practice of bringing your own liquor with you when you dine out.
