Latvia to hold minute of silence on second anniversary of Russian invasion of Ukraine

Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs, Prime Minister Evika Siliņa, Seimas Speaker Daiga Mieriņa and Foreign Minister Krišjānis Kariņš have called on residents to express solidarity with the people of Ukraine and join in a minute of silence on Saturday, 24 February, at 09:00.

"Russia knows that it will not be able to break Ukraine in a fair fight on the battlefield. Russia therefore resorts to all forms of crime: it attacks civilians, bombs cities, abducts Ukrainian children. It is putting pressure on Ukraine’s international partners in the hope that we will all tire out as the war persists," the Latvian State Chancellery reported to Latvian information agency LETA.

By calling for the minute of silence, the Latvian government wants to inform the Russian authorities that the Latvian state and people tirelessly support Ukraine. The statement said Latvia will continue to provide any assistance until Ukraine’s complete victory.

"It [Russia] will have to return Ukrainian children. Russia and its leaders will have to be held accountable for aggression and war crimes," the senior Latvian officials stressed.

The statement also expresses respect for the Ukrainians who "fearlessly confront the aggressor". And it is a pity that Ukrainians "continue to lose their lives" in the struggle to protect their country and the future of their children. "Ukrainians are also standing on guard for peace and security throughout Europe, including Latvia," the Latvian politicians stressed.

On the occasion of the second anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, various events in support of Ukraine will be held in Riga. The central one is a rally "Together – to Victory", which starts at 12:30 on Saturday near the Freedom Monument.

On Thursday, 22 February, Ruslan Stefanchuk, speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, will address the Seimas on the occasion of the second anniversary of the full-scale military invasion of Russia. This extraordinary session will begin at 09:00 with an address by President Edgars Rinkēvičs. Seimas Speaker Daiga Mieriņa and Prime Minister Evika Siliņa will also speak.

The foreign ministers of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia have condemned Russia's intentions to hold presidential "elections" in the occupied territories of Ukraine.

Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs believes that the best response in the world to the death of Alexei Navalny, Russian opposition leader, is strengthening assistance to Ukraine so that Russia loses.

He’s sitting at the end of the table across from the guy with white hair.

No I don’t think Zelensky was part of that group.

At that point I think he was in Poland, green screening like he was still in Kiev.

I can’t believe how FR, an American Conservative Christian site, has devolved into a platform for Slavic tribes to spread their propaganda and to fight among themselves.

At least the feathers are the right color.

Yes, that’s him. Denys Kireyev. Later hailed as a hero who saved Kiev, but killed by AZOV goons as a “traitor” in March, 2022.

Is al-Sadr still alive?

Probably. I haven’t heard anything of his demise. Unfortunately.

I haven’t been over there in about ten years, but I know his minions are still up to no good.

Weird situation regarding Denys Kireyev. Apparently he was a hero because he helped to save Kyiv during the Day One. Then the Ukrainian Intelligence Service had him killed. Could be as simple as someone had an axe to grind against him.

Ukraine is a messy country fighting to keep their freedom from Russia.

That would be my assumption as well.

People often want to attribute these things to political differences or some sort of ideological struggle, when most murders are for person resentments and grudges.

And the uncontrolled free-for-all that prevailed in the Kiev area in the weeks after the war - they gave out AKs to everyone and there were murders every night that were covered over as “executing traitors” but were much more likely gangland slayings and score settling.

Latvia stands strong with Ukraine: Latvia Foreign Affairs Minister speaks at Raisina Dialogue 2024
ANI
2-23-2024 5:30 a.m. EST

New Delhi [India], February 23 (ANI): Foreign Affairs Minister of the Republic of Latvia, Krisjanis Karins shed light on his country’s unwavering support for Ukraine in the face of the ongoing Russian invasion.

Speaking to ANI on the sidelines of the third day of the Raisina Dialogue 2024, the visiting minister emphasized Latvia’s substantial contribution to Ukraine, “We provide weapons from the government; we provide humanitarian aid, we provide financial assistance, and it’s not only the government; it’s also civil society.”

“So we have many organizations which have sprung up out of nowhere, which provide ambulances, which provide school buses, which provide other automobiles, which provide medical equipment, which provide drones, which provide money,” he added

In addition, he added that Latvia has allocated approximately 1% of its GDP to aid the war-torn nation.

In an interview with ANI after participating in the Raisina Dialogue 2024, emphasizing the fact that it’s an entire country effort, Krisjanis Karins says, “Everything that you can imagine is being supplied. People who don’t have lots of money donate their time to make something. People who have more money donate the money so they can purchase more goods.

“We understand as Latvians that the Ukrainians are fighting also in our place because this is a war of imperialism, a war of aggression” [excerpt]
