The sale of a 39-year-old Los Gatos bakery sent one devoted customer into a frenzy
Last week, out of complete desperation, Mike Metz of Los Angeles hopped a flight to the Bay Area for a slice of his favorite maple pound cake. And his wife’s must-have s’mores bar.
Last week, out of complete desperation, Mike Metz of Los Angeles hopped a flight to the Bay Area for a slice of his favorite maple pound cake. And his wife’s must-have s’mores bar.
Without so much as a second thought, the TV writer and father of two booked a hotel, flew into San Jose, rented a car and drove straight to Icing on the Cake in Los Gatos. His favorite bakery of 39 years was for sale, and he hadn’t visited it in over two years. He needed to be there and see his friend, owner Lynn Magnoli, to make sure she was OK. And stock up for the winter.
“I don’t think I’ve ever been to a bakery that does that many things so well,” Metz said over the phone. “There’s a quality and consistency there. Some of it is nostalgia for sure. It’s the bakery every town wishes it had.”
Magnoli opened Icing on the Cake in 1985 and has grown it into what is arguably the most beloved neighborhood bakery in this part of the South Bay. She is selling the business not to retire but to pursue new endeavors, and would like to be useful to the next owner. Located on W. Would you fly 300 miles for a piece of a$$?
Bite marks while in flight:
They had the best cake! The banana cake was wonderful. Their vanilla cake with raspberry filling was great.
Yeah, if it’s a shredded pork rump BBQ from Pigman’s in Kitty Hawk served with their East Carolina sauce and cole slaw.
I wonder if the bakery’s food is as good as he says. I presume they don’t ship orders of food, or he wouldn’t have had to fly there.
Shatner or Lithgow?
