Sales Tax?
It probably works out to over $1,000 for the employer, who may have made less than a quarter on the meal after expenses.
“had nothing to do with the tip. She did receive the entire tip, she did not pay taxes on it (the business did). Yes, she shared the tip at the request of the man that left it.”
So why does the business pay the tax?
——-
As I recall, at least through the 70’s (though I’m not certain), waitstaff paid their own taxes on the tips received. The amount to be taxed was reported to the restaurant via the honor system.
Then the feds got into it. No matter what your hourly rate was, the amount of tips received were added to the paystub to reach minimum wage. The amount was automatically added by the restaurant, no matter if the amount of tips reached that goal or not.
This wasn’t good enough for the feds, because, I assume, we are all guilty of subterfuge. This is when waitstaff were forced to report EVERY PENNY received in tips, so taxes could be taken from the paycheck.
And if I had been the waitress and told to share that large of an amount, (which is typically done voluntarily to busboys, cooks, etc.) I’d refuse the total. Yes, I would, and I have refused large tips in the past for various reasons. ( though not that large)
No wonder everyone is pissed off.😂
It’s a shame we never get to hear all the nuts and bolts of stories like this. I’m guessing probably not more than a half dozen people know everything about it.
Although it happens, more often than not things are not nearly as straightforward as seen in the news story. I think that’s because the people who write the stories are stupid and don’t research them as well as not wanting to make anything too complicated for the masses who read it.
“She shouldn’t have posted about it on social media!”
Super-correct. She should have reported 20% tip and secretly pocketed the 10k minus a few bucks.
This is correct. The tip was an $1,100 hit to the restaurant.
No Good Deed goes unpunished
No way to do that.
Social media or not, taxes would have to be paid.
I’m 90% deemed unemployable which then makes it 100%. And that is not bragging, I’d rather not have the issues that created the award.
I read your personal page. It appears we may have something in common from our bullet dodging and Agent Orange experience.
I also recall my first day there. The heat, the humidity. What struck me the hardest was the troops in dirty wrinkled uniforms, unshaven, dirty boots and full combat gear. They had apparently been out in the field for some time. That’s when reality of the war first hit.
The business handled this badly. They probably acted in haste and said unkind things rather than negotiate a mutual agreement.
I agree. Ou know that any wait peron who receives large tip should be praised,,,she shared it as she had promised the customer.
That would be smart because it solidifies good feelings between the mangement and staff.Take the wait persons photo and put it on the wall with the label Legendary Waitress.Have a wall full of them over the years.
That is the sort of thihg a relly good manager does. Then he can ask for the best from staff, especually when the business needs a ittle extra push at high flow times of the year. The owner seemed to decide to not make his business a great one out of this...just thinkof the advertising he would have gotten...food and sevice so good my witress was tipped 10 grand! BUt thats not what was done.
But I reckon we now live in nasty times...cancel culture....lefty ideologues souring the economy and the natural kindness which is the usual among our People.
I am afraid that all of the nastiness created by the left in attitudes towards law enforcement, towards crime, towards illegal alien allowed influx, along with inflationary pressure, race baiting, CRT, DEI ,and the draconian Covid Laws which separated people, all are combining to erode the usual cordial nature that used to exist among Americans.
We need our civil society back, one in which we applaud the success of others without jealousy or unfair criticism.
Lets hope we can get it back. The November election will dictate whether we can start moving towards making America safe, secure, prosperous and kind once again.
This waitress situation is much like a canary in a cage indicator. We pay the wages of extremism.
All manners, civility, polite and patient discovery have been lost. Now it’s snap negative judgement in every confusing situation, making enemies out of former friends or associates.
So sez you, commie! Your mother wears army boots. Also, I didn't read the article or the thread. What's it about?
LOL!
