Kids have been raised by parents who for decades have constantly told them that they are “special” and hover over them day and night.

Our parents, Adam & Eve, gained the ‘hidden knowledge’ that was stated to make them wise - to know good and evil - because that evil being God was holding out on them. It worked! Not only did they now know about good and evil but they also learned who they were apart from their creator - and that, as they say, is the rest of the story (well, almost)! Now… even gaining the whole world is not enough to fill the void in their lives left from that disaster.

The antidote is what spiritual leaders have always called for — self knowledge and humility. As religious faith has waned, these qualities likewise have become vanishingly scarce. Call it narcissism if one wants, but it is not new but yes it is becoming the norm instead of the
exception. Someone once posted here an article about “the cluster B culture,” which was very apt, and NPD is one of the cluster B pathologies.
