When she took the throne in 1952, more than a quarter of the world's population was under British imperial power. That was more than 700 million people — including in parts of Africa, Asia, the Middle East and the Pacific islands. ,p> While her 70-year reign saw the British Empire become the Commonwealth of Nations — and the decline of the United Kingdom's global influence — the scars of colonialism linger. American journalists are so dumb and lazy. They don’t understand that the British sovereign is a constitutional monarch and head diplomat, but not a political official. The queen or king cannot make or change laws; Parliament does that. Complaints should be lodged with whomever was Prime Minister at the time, and his or her party.

So what does the monarchy do?

They are head diplomats with other countries and the 50 or so nations of their commonwealth, patrons of charities, and caretakers of the well-being of UK's people, organizations and institutions. They are supposed to avoid politics and focus on the ceremonies, traditions, cultural uniqueness and advancement of their realms. Much of what they do is somewhat like our State Department.
