I read 20x faster than hearing the text spoken, at least.
I was tested.
When we were in school in the 1960’s (a Catholic boys school in Asia), they were big on speed reading, as it was a hot thing at the time. The general outcome of speed reading training is mixed. A few do get a huge boost from this, and I was one of those few. I was the fastest reader in school, by far, after a few months.
And that has stuck with me.
Reading speed (holding tested retention constant) legitimately varies among individuals.

Ditto I was taught and tested in the one room school I attended in Vermont.
This was just before Vermont was taken over by the hippies.
