Ex-Nato head says Putin wanted to join alliance early on in his rule
The Guardian ^ | 11/4/21 | Jenifer Rankin

Vladimir Putin wanted Russia to join Nato but did not want his country to have to go through the usual application process and stand in line “with a lot of countries that don’t matter”, according to a former secretary general of the transatlantic alliance. George Robertson, a former Labour defence secretary who led Nato between 1999 and 2003, said Putin made it clear at their first meeting that he wanted Russia to be part of western Europe. “They wanted to be part of that secure, stable prosperous west that Russia was out of at the time,” he said. The Labour peer recalled an early meeting with Putin, who became Russian president in 2000. “Putin said: ‘When are you going to invite us to join Nato?’ And [Robertson] said: ‘Well, we don’t invite people to join Nato, they apply to join Nato.’ And he said: ‘Well, we’re not standing in line with a lot of countries that don’t matter.’” The account chimes with what Putin told the late David Frost in a BBC interview shortly before he was first inaugurated as Russian president more than 21 years ago. Putin told Frost he would not rule out joining Nato “if and when Russia’s views are taken into account as those of an equal partner”.

Just imagine Russia in NATO today. An integrated entire European community, economically as well as militarily. We were able to kiss and make up with the Nazis, why not the European ex commies? All of those Russian resources opened up for a desperate EU. Who are the natural existential threats for all of Europe (including the Russian half)? I count two. Russia is every bit as “North Atlantic” as most of the current members.

Hopefully we would of been able to do so. But, we just had to see whether they had really changed. It looks like they have not.

And he said: "Well, we’re not standing in line with a lot of countries that don’t matter."

The Putin for the Win.

Who knows if this is true?
What purpose would it serve and would it just be the Turkey of NATO, where if we didn’t send Russia billions of dollars that it would cause trouble?

The NeoCons handled the end of the USSR and Warsaw Pact with all the deftness and wisdom of the Versaille Treaty.

Brilliant !

We should have welcomed them. How much better off would we all be.

But Daddy Warbucks rules. Gotta have a perpetual boogey man.

Putin just said that a few days ago to Tucker.

What does this twit have to say about Clinton’s “no” response?

Britain has been at war with Russia since the 16th century and there was no way the Brits would have allowed Russia into NATO because it would push them to the periphery of Europe.

Russia is [or should still be] an integral part of Western Civ.

Especially against Islam.

China Civ. [minus the current CCP] is not theoretically an enemy.

Things today are totally screwed up; because Marxism.

‘Just imagine Russia in NATO today. An integrated entire European community, economically as well as militarily.”

VERY SAD. If that were the case, then China would have a credible counterbalance, as opposed to where we are. Even Putin thinks we were CRAZY to drive him into China’s arms...but I guess that’s what hormone-driven HATRED does to people.

Armstrong has discussed in depth Russia’s willingness to join NATO. Remarkable behind the scenes events by the West insured they never could…..
….the logical and apparent reason is the US war manufacturers ( a $$$ Trillion industry ) would no longer be needed.

". . . NATO today. An integrated entire European community . . ."

Then why are we in it?

Who’s lying the ex head of NATO or the Guardian? This is not news. It was reported at the time. Putin wasn’t lying about it the other day. The West just blew it.

It was the military industrial complex that blew it. Less money will be invested if you don’t have enemies.

Putty has craved his whole life to be as great as Catherine II. He’s not fit to kiss the hem of her skirt. He’s weak, small, impotent.

He has a nuclear arsenal built by others, though, so he’s a dangerous little guy.
