Left lane driving bill passes West Virginia Senate

CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – The West Virginia State Senate has passed a bill designed to keep slow drivers out of the fast lane.

Senate Bill 441 was introduced to the State Senate in January with a goal of restricting slow drivers from driving in the left lane, or the fast lane, of multi-lane roads. It would require drivers to remain in the right lane, except in circumstances such as passing a vehicle, preparing to exit to the left or if the right side of the road is in need of repair or otherwise unsafe to drive on, among other exceptions.

Should the bill pass the House and be signed into law, the West Virginia Division of Highways would also be required to post appropriate signs to alert drivers of the rule to keep right.

Wow, I'm of mixed mind on this. Yes, get those idiots out of the left lane causing congestion. However, I've traveled 15 MPH over the posted limit trying to get past the slow pokes while being tailgated.

It's okay to be a slowpoke. Just don't be a slowpoke in the left lane. You'll cause accidents.

Depends. You're traveling the speed limit in the right lane I agree. But you're traveling 10 MPH under the limit on the interstate causing merging issues, take the side roads and pull over to allow people to pass.

Legalize stock car horns for left lane driving.

(A stock car horn is the front bumper).

I agree. Speed limit is slowpoke and 10 MPH below the speed limit is you need to get off the interstate/expressway.

It seems that that was a NYS law when I learned to drive in the ‘60s, and the cops were real persnickety about it.

I don’t understand why it’s so hard for people. There is a side road pretty much perpendicular to the highway here for a long stretch, and especially when it rains, people will put their hazards on and go 10-20 miles under the speed limit.

The highway speed limit is 60, and the side road 40. People are blowing by them on the highway. Common sense would say, “Take the side road!”

My dad that drove the meat wagon for the morgue in Wayne County (Detroit) told me that cops want to keep traffic flowing (he interacted with the police a lot). Made sense to me. Unfortunately every time the cops pull over some idiot there is a bottle neck.

I really noticed that in Thailand where police set up traffic blocks to extort money from drivers.

The left lane can be filled with water coming in from the shoulder. Those in that lane can find their car hydroplaning over the water. I would see it a safety issue moving out of that lane while trying to navigate pools of water. Slowing down that lane prevents others from flying through and going out of control in a sudden hydroplane. Having to slow down and waiting for the lane to the right to open up is hard to do safely. So, as a safety measure, slow down, stay in the right lane while you safely navigate the pools of water, slow other down behind you, keep an eye open for an opportunity to get into the right lane safely.

Got it?

The sign of a state without really crowded highways.

“...pull over to allow people to pass.”

Many states are using this type of traffic law. In Washington state, If you are driving less than the maximum allowable, and there are seven cars in the immdiate spaces behind you, you are required to pull over and let them pass. Problem is I’ve never seen this enforced ever for a four wheeler and I’ve only heard about one ticket ever written for it. If they don’t enforce the law, it will just be the same as before they wasted the time and money making it. And if they don’t, then their only recourse is to lower the speed in given areas where this is observed making the faster driver more apt to gamble passing or over solid lines.

I commuted to work in WV over the mountains. I thought it was smart that the school busses would pull off into a cutout if they had a line of cars behind them. You’re not going to find this level of courtesy today. People driving today are stupid, in N.C. half of them are feeble or heavily medicated. If want safer drivers, replace the airbag with a spear.

How about a bill keeping fast drivers out of the slow lane on 3-lane roads?

Right lane speeders get my vote for total annihilation at the next red light.

At least in Florida.

there were signs nation wide “Slower Traffic Keep Right” for years!! Then some moron decided to get rid of them.

For those morons who dont agree it is a simple rule... Go with the flow, or move over and deal with the flow! You dont decide the flow!!

I drive fast. Those slow drivers are more hazardous than fast drivers. We pay far more attention to our surroundings while generally being safer in the road. We use our signals, don’t cause a hazard by driving too slow and otherwise follow traffic laws.
Stay off the freeway if you’re a dolt that can’t keep up. Stay off the freeway if you’ve got white hair and travel 45 in the fast lane. Stay off the freeway if you’re black. Blacks are the absolute worst freaking drivers. Either too fast or too slow, way too slow. Can’t or won’t use signals and they’re the ones out fishing for people to hit them. You know the lawyer lottery payday system that keeps the food on their table.

Georgia has the law but it’s not enforced at all. It’s just a symbolic law that may get used if a cop is directly behind the slowpoke. Slowing down everyone in the fast lane is ok.
Same with the cell phone law. These idiots using the cell phone and driving slow or erratic will eventually cause an accident yet that law isn’t enforced either.

Yea what’s up with Florida? The minute I cross into that state it becomes the opposite of everywhere else. Slow lane or cotton top lane is the left lane, right lane is the fast lane.
It should be legal to exterminate stupid drivers. If you can’t maintain the speed limit and/or keep up with traffic get off the freeway period.

Great. But just another traffic law that won’t be enforced. How about enforcing not driving on the shoulder, using on/off ramps as passing lanes, and blinding headlights all over the place. Why don’t we do that eh?
