Of all post-war decades, the 1970s has undoubtedly had the worst press, but the truth is that most ordinary families in 1970s Britain were better off than ever, writes historian Dominic Sandbrook.
The 1950s are symbolised by the television and the washing machine, which transformed the lives of so many families.
We misremember the 1960s as the decade of the Mini, which was actually invented in 1959, the mini-skirt, which surprisingly few women actually wore, and the Pill, which most women never took. We remember the 1980s as the decade of gigantic hair, shoulder-pads, the Filofax and the home computer.

Can anyone look at Biden and his political career honestly say the Delaware legislature would make a worse choice - 7 times!
Repeal the 17th Amendment!
State legislature can’t do worse!
That much is true.
But I could do without Stagflation 2.0 in present day.
I survived the 70’s. It was horrible. The hair styles. the clothing, the decor, the music (excluding Mowtown), etc.
Sadly, the Jimmy Carter BS is what these idiots are fond of.
Indeed. We SHOULD have learned a few things.
I had the 351 Cleveland
Rubber in all 4 gears
Only guy who could match me had 383 ‘71 Super Bee
Should have.
But our politicians seem to be doing all they can to bring back the worst parts of the past.
During the 1970s UK was known as “the sick man of Europe” due to failing economy and social dysfunction under Labor mismanagement. In the US it meant stagflation, oil embargoes and shortages, wasted billions on synfuels. Worldwide it was the loss of VietNam and perhaps a dozen other nations to communist control; Mullahs taking over Iran; giving up the Panama Canal, as the abortive government of Jimmy Carter caused severe damage to the Free World internationally. Yeah, a crappy decade.
One of the reasons is the music was so gawd awful. I consider 70s music to be the Dark Ages of music, 80s to be the Renaissance and the 90s to be the Golden Era.
Mine was kind of a dark metallic blue w/silver accents/stripes. A friend had a 72 grabber blue w/silver. The girls liked my 71s color better than his. But he had the Cleveland. And it put mine to utter shame. How mine got the Mach 1 detailing is beyond me.
I took a girl to the Senior Prom in Spring 1969. I still remember her miniskirt when we ditched class one fine spring day.
The ‘70s were cool...
Speaking of, should the world have run out of oil by now. They told us the world was running out of oil/
I'm the opposite. In my opinion, 1925-1936 was the Platinum Era and 1937-1964 was the Golden Era. With the onset of Beatlemania, the Dark Age began and the music got progressively worse. There are only a few songs that I like from the 1980's onward.
There was Boomers and then around 1955 to 1965 there were Boomers II
The “Boomers” messed up everything and continue to this day.
The delineation point was Boomers II had draft cards and the draft was ended before they were drafted. They experienced a totally different experience than Boomers and were too young to riot and protest, and quietly moved into the ranks of society where they reside today the 1955 group turn 70 next year.
Some of the original Boomers will disagree but it has pretty much been researched and the hypothesis is well documented.
I tend to agree.
The Wishbone offense was exciting to watch, but it was fumble-prone. And it used four men in the backfield, so it wasn’t good for passing, which could be a big problem if you fell behind and needed to make some quick scores.
Bright yellow black with black trim
Once had the 8 A and B team cheerleaders crammed in there with me to see if we could fit
Aaaaah, the glory days of youth
I personally had a good time growing up in the 70s. Maybe it’s because I lived in a small town.
Same here. I had a blast. I went from 11-17 in the 70s.
Dammit.
One too many “black” in that first sentence
