The disappearance of top Russian generals dating back to September has sparked questions about their whereabouts amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
Russian and Ukrainian forces have presented different public findings since the purported death of Russian Admiral Viktor Sokolov, who Kyiv said was one of 34 Russian officers killed in late September by a missile strike executed against the headquarters of the Russian Navy's Black Sea fleet in annexed Crimea. Sokolov was viewed by Ukrainian forces as a high-value target.
The lack of visibility by Russia's top general, Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov, has additionally caused wonderment regarding whether he was killed as part of a Ukrainian strike at the beginning of this year on a Russian military command post. The attack occurred near Sevastopol and in proximity to a military unit near the city of Yevpatoria, in separate strikes on the Black Sea peninsula.

The government of Ukraine has informed the White House that President Volodymyr Zelensky has decided to fire his top military commander, Gen. Valery Zaluzhny, in what would be the most consequential personnel shake-up of the war, said two people familiar with the discussion.
White House officials did not support or object to the high-stakes decision, but acknowledged it as the president’s sovereign choice, these people said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive conversation.
Zelensky has yet to issue a formal decree announcing the ouster of Zaluzhny, and it is uncertain when that might happen. The advance notice to Washington, which has not been previously reported, reflects the influential role of the United States as Ukraine’s most powerful military and political backer.
Dopamine.
Well tended grounds and building. Shame they sent all the maintenance guys went to the front to die.
FREEPER FOLLIES PINGLIST!!
Lil’ z on his last days
The insane idea that Russia can concour Europe when it can’t even concour Ukraine. Many people still living in the 80’s thinking Russia is a first world power. They are a second rate country with nukes that’s all.
“Putin’s Top Generals Have Gone Missing”
That’s a DAMN GOOD reason to STOP funding Russia’s war.
“every cent I earn until April is gone to pay income tax”
If you are retired and receiving SS, and your income is less than @40K, you could move to Spain and get generally better tax treatment, and a lower cost of living given the quality of life makes the decision a slam dunk IMHO.
The breakeven, including cost of living plus medical costs may come in at 60-100K. Of course beyond that it is largely about intangibles.
This news will probably drive up the cost of eggs in Ruzzia.
I still have many years of work to do.
Unless I hit the lottery or I finally publish that novel…
I was looking up what to do on vacation in Bilbao yesterday.
Not quite yet, but they are getting there.
Maybe they're having prostrate surgery and they're "extremely private"?
More Russian offense is coming.
What a messy way to go. {sad sigh…}
Bilbao is not really the best place to go on vacation.
The weather is like Seattle.
Its not “historic” as it was a very small town in medieval times, and wasn’t really built out till the late 19th century. Its got its medieval town, the “casco viejo” and a couple of medieval churches, one of which is a very small cathedral.
The Guggenheim is mainly a POS IMHO.
Bilbao is a place to live, mainly, not to tour. Its a good base for road trips. Btw, getting there from Madrid is about the slowest train in Spain.
If you want to see “stuff” there is the rest of glorious Spain.
If you just have a week or so I would stick to Madrid. There is way more than enough to keep you busy. Do not miss Segovia, a bit of a pocket miracle, which is an hour away, or Toledo, likewise. But Toledo itself probably rates a week.
I am focused on the existence of 20 million fully trained Russian Reservists who were returned to civilian life after their 1 year conscription.
People need to understand they have done conscription for decades. It’s not just 2 years old. They have had a draft for decades and all those accumulated guys are still military trained as Reservists.
This is 6 million, but that number is added to by military people who enlisted voluntarily and then left service after XX years. This is a much higher number. 20 million Reservists is not unreasonable an estimate.
Putin mobilized only 300K.
There are many blogs with people knowing nothing on them saying anti Russia and pro Russia things. The mainstream media similarly knows nothing.
We do know Putin mobilized only 300K. This is added to regular active duty troops, but only a relatively small portion of these are assigned to the region. Remember, they have troops in Syria and patrolling their enormous border to the east all the way to the Pacific.
Putin did not commit serious force totals to Ukraine for this de-nazification/de-militarization effort. This is very clear in the context of the enormous Reserves numbers, untapped.
My guess is there has been superb analysis among the senior officers of the Army. They know there will be political NATO battles over funding Ukraine. They also knew they needed a strategy that would not depend on those battles/decisions about funding and supply.
If you view things from that perspective, it seems clear the resource NATO cannot supply is troops. So Putin must have been persuaded by his military that 300K sufficed to generate very large kill ratios via enormous artillery ammunition quantities. Ukraine would run out of troops.
As for NATO arraying an expeditionary force because the NATO folks are not stupid and can now see this Russian strategy, that is a big step. The risks are many, but I would guess the primary risk is having NATO casualties accumulate and further erode support for funding.
How is crime and transportation?
