“Branch water”, originally sold by the distiller, was from the same stream (branch) from which the whiskey was made. Purists thought that complemented the whiskey.If it was good enough for James Bond, it's good enough for me. I don't think it was ever shown in the movies, but the books (a couple anyway) had Bond drinking a Bourbon and Branch on occasion.

That had nothing to do with the alcohol. It had to do with boiling the water to make it, which killed the bacteria.
