Opossum 'porch pirate' steals box of 15-year-old's birthday cookies, video shows

An opossum "porch pirate" has been captured on video in Texas stealing a 15-year-old's box of birthday cookies from the front door of his family’s home.

The incident on Jan. 26 happened after the "gift came a little late in the evening when the fam was probably out celebrating, so it went unnoticed into the night… which set up a seemingly impossumable theft," the Southlake Department of Public Safety says.

Video released by authorities shows an opossum wandering up to the entrance of the residence and then dragging away the box of treats after removing a blue birthday balloon attached to the package.

Opossums and armadillos always seemed to be the most road kills.

I have only seen one armadillo alive outside a zoo, never an opossum. Always roadkill.

Opossum tax. My dog supports the opossum if for only the case law possibility.

I have several opossums that come to my porch every night. Always leave them food. Had a couple raccoons the other day too

Years ago we would have all the cousins over before Christmas every year to make ginger bread houses. (Very easy - private message me for instructions). One year our kids put their houses out on our deck. When we looked out there later we saw a possum happily eating them. If you have outdoor cats the possums and sometimes raccoons will come eat their food.

Opossums are the best. Don’t carry rabies due to their low body temperature, eat ticks. I have an albino one who stops by almost every night.

When I was a pre-driving-age teen, I’m out wandering around the neighborhood, I hear my mother screaming in the distance for me, and “there’s a rat in the house!” I think it was Dad’s bowling night or something, and she knew I was around.

We had cats, and she used to keep the garage door up about a foot so they could come and go. Well, a juvenile possum had come in the basement level garage, up the stairs, thru the edge of the kitchen and dining room, and into a large utility room next to the dining room. That was the “rat”.

I end up getting gloves and a rake and encouraging the possum into a big canvas bag that he did NOT want to go in. Did I mention that up close, possums have about 4 billion sharp pointy teeth?

Anyway, I got him into the bag and carried him away from the houses, dropped the bag, went about 50 yards away for a bit, then retrieved my bag.

And we laughed about the “rat” for a long time!

Possum eat my chickens though. Had 2 baby possums, get through the wire and kill 40 chicks. All they do is bite their heads off. The sentence was leas poisoning.

Sad, but can’t mess with the livestock. Death sentence in my neighborhood too, although fox are more of a nuisance in our town.
