The shooter at Lakewood Church on Sunday is deceased, authorities confirmed during a Sunday press conference. A 5-year-old child was shot during an ensuing firefight between responding officers and the suspect and is in critical condition. The child has been transported to Texas Children’s Hospital.
Houston Police Chief Troy Finner told media gathered outside Lakewood that the suspect was a woman between the ages of 30 and 35. The suspect entered the building through an entrance on its western side at 1:53 p.m. The suspect was wielding a long gun and wearing a trench coat and backpack and was accompanied by a small child of about four or five years old.
The woman was downed by two off-duty officers working at the church. One was a veteran Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission officer, the other a 28-year-old HPD officer. After being shot, the woman told authorities she had a bomb, Finner told media. Subsequent searches of her person and vehicle have not yielded explosives, authorities said. The woman was also said to have sprayed some material on the ground before dying, according to Finner.
