There are basically three groups of people who live in and near Park City:
- Multimillionaires with their plush mansions and ski lodges. Many of these have Hollywood/entertainment industry ties.
- Longtime residents, many of them Mormon, who are part of a dwindling middle class. Fun fact: It was initially named Parley's Park for Mormon apostle and Romney ancestor Parley P. Pratt.
- Hispanics and other foreigners who serve as service army for group #1.
The silver mining rights were acquired by William Randolph Hearst after the Civil War and were the basis for the Hearst family wealth. When the silver was mined out post World War II, the tunnels remaining became a means to transport water from the high elevations around the city to the Provo-Orem metro area developing to the southwest and also transformed the town into a world famous ski resort.Between the voting block of groups 1 and 3, the area is one of the few reliably Democrat voting areas in Utah.
