What Marie Antoinette said, often translated as, “Let them eat cake”, was actually more like, “Louis, Louis, give them cake!”

Marie Antoinette thought that giving the clamoring urban poor cake instead of bread was a greater kindness, and she also thought that Louis, with a snap of his fingers, could magically create the cake and distribute it.

The fruit cake comment was right on.
