As Doctor Who legend Tom Baker celebrates his 90th birthday, we had to mark the occasion in style – with some rare and newly released photos of the man himself.
Last year, Baker, who famously played the Fourth Doctor, celebrated Doctor Who's 60th anniversary with Radio Times magazine, opening up in an interview and posing for photos.
Now, we can exclusively share five more portraits from that shoot, which show Baker suited up and draped in a replica of his iconic Fourth Doctor scarf.
To date, Baker remains the longest-serving Doctor, playing the Time Lord from 1974 to 1981. His incarnation is instantly recognisable, with fans still deeply invested in his Doctor and characters from his era.
Just recently, Louise Jameson starred in a short written and directed by Pete McTighe, which saw her character Leela leaving the battlefield of the Time War and returning to the TARDIS to reunite with Baker's Fourth Doctor.
Speaking to Radio Times a few months before his 90th birthday, Baker said: "Nobody failed as Doctor Who, did they?" adding: "Well, we mustn't be ungenerous to anyone. But certainly I didn't."
As for anything he thought the new Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa, should know? "Knowing anything is a bit dangerous when you play Doctor Who," he said.
It's better to know nothing. And to be good-natured. The trick is to respond generously to other actors, which halves your task because you don't have to be driving it all the time."
However, he made it clear that a reunion with his fellow Doctors wouldn't be on the cards, saying: "I avoid them, you know. Not with any malice. A degree of contempt, perhaps. But mildly. Mildly contemptuous."
Davidson's daughter was in a few of the new series' shows and in REAL life, she later married Tennant.
This whole thing is RIDICULOUS! ... Time Lords can ONLY regenerate 12 times
—
Science progresses and things change, so its easy to come up with an explanation, and I seen to remember there was something about that in one of the shows - I don’t remember which.
The Master always come back - as he always has backup plans in case the current one fails. In one episode his consciousness was inside a ring, and he managed to takeover the body of the wearer.
The ridiculousness is part of the fun.
The new series had/has NONE of that and sol, was NEVER as good and just kept on getting worse and worse and then GOD AWFUL! I gave up on it with the last male Doctor and haven't watched it since.
Nope...do NOT play games with the sex of the Doctor, nor the prescribed number of regenerations!
“He was the best Doctor in my book.”
Agree.
I like the photos even though they look a bit AI-enhanced.
My Favorite Doctor!
He also portrayed a convincing Rasputin in “Nicholas and Alexandra”.
Thanks, I’ll check it out.
wow! What a coincidence, or maybe I knew in my subconscious. I was just at the library and checked out a few Doctor movies starring that doctor.
The Time Lords didn't do that for the Master, but they did do it for the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) in his final story. So the Doctor has thirteen new lives.
I don't care what happens anymore with this show. Disney and Russell T. Davies have ruined it forever.
Hmmmmmm...maybe I missed the Matt Smith show that THAT occurred in. I was getting turned off, by then, and not as avid a watcher of the show.
Thanks for the info.
Yes, Davis has RUINED Doctor Who!
not being snarky, but I think he looks like an elderly David Tennant.
I also remember watching Dr Who in the 70’s when Tom Baker was the Dr. Our PBS station or Ats and Entertainment station would have Dr who on in the morning.
He looks great!
See post 11.
Yep...you beat me to it.
PPc version. The Silver Chair. He was wonderful.
He ruined it now or from the very start of the revival in 2005?
He looks damn good for 90. God bless ‘em.
He is THE Dr. Who of all time for me. Happy 90th birtday mr.Baker. I wonder if he will see this? :)
From the start of the new series, somewhat ( took the FUN out of it! ), but it rapidly went waaaaaaaaaaay down hill as time went by, for me.
You are correct WWOR-TV. And they would replay the episode saturday night.
