Personally, I think a planet-scale object passed close enough to Earth (or vice versa) that the plasma sheaths (about 10 diameters each) came into contact, setting off a planetary scale discharge of lightning.

You're on the right track. I don't even question at this point that event was Sirius within our system. Though going by Heinrich cycles there is two major events. Happens every 6000 years. Sirius likely passed 12K years ago. But something else that triggers this event that is smaller. We're coming up to that one.

I believe its a small dead star which would be very hard to see due to stars are made of Metallic hydrogen which absorbs light.

There is an alternative theory besides being invaded by a dark planet/star, and that is a pole shift every 12,000 years (we’re due and it’s started).
