Hopelessness is at epidemic levels and taking a toll on people and organizations. Workers of all ages are feeling more hopeless than ever. A national poll released this past spring by the Institute of Politics at Harvard Kennedy School found that nearly half of Americans under 30 years old reported feeling “down, depressed, or hopeless” at least several days a week. In 2023, U.S. employee engagement fell at a rate 10 times faster than in the previous three years, according to one estimate. Globally, employee stress is at a record high, according to Gallup’s State of the Global Workplace 2023 report.
As the pandemic moves into our rearview, the rapid adoption of new technology and AI is keeping uncertainty at the forefront. Gallup data shows that more workers fear that technology is making their jobs obsolete. That fear jumped by seven points since 2021 and has grown more in the past two years than at any time in Gallup’s trend since 2017.
In 2020, there were 183 unruly airline passenger reports. In 2021, there were more than 5,981.
An organization (or a community, or a family) filled with people that have a sense of meaning and purpose is stronger than one made up of disengaged, unhealthy, and unhappy people.

That’s what happens when you haven’t bothered to educate yourself.
The woke revolution has turned workplaces into toxic waste dumps—employees cannot work effectively in teams if they are in mortal fear of accidentally committing a mortal sin against the human resources pantheon.
Tang ping aka lying flat aka quiet quitting. Employment loyalty is a two way street.
While the study cited some decent information, I lost any faith in their conclusions upon reading those two words.
The main problem with “quiet quitting” is that the employee misses the opportunity to develop their own skills and marketability—worthwhile even if (in fact especially if) they hate their current employer.
If you don't have a skill, you're basically worthless.
Its partially work, but work not the main cause
Most people, now and in the past, do not find meaning in their work. Most people do jobs because they need money, are supporting a family, etc... They found meaning elsewhere - home, family, community roots, social organizations, church, faith, etc...
Now people think their work is making them hopeless. In fact, its a loss of meaning elsewhere in their lives, particularly a our post-modern, atomistic society and loss of faith in God.
.
What do they expect?
Remove God and faith from our society and culture, destroy the economy and any chance of making something, keep people locked up and prohibit free association, run non-stop fear porn about their health and *climate*, and allow the country to be invaded by foreign nationals for the purpose of destroying it with crime and anarchy, and what does anyone expect?
Thanks democrats. Great job. ( And that includes RINO’s since they are nothing more than dem operatives who got elected through to false representation of who they are.)
And pervert justice so the innocent are punished and the guilty not only set free, but rewarded.
I’ve been seeing stories about Gen-Zers. They’re described as either lazy or entitled. Either way, it doesn’t sound good.
Feminism hits the work wall at 30, and so reality begins.
I’m trying to move on and away from what used to be a very good place to be employed.
A few key people have left or are very likely to. Replacements would be questionable, especially good people.
I’m the only one who does what he does there. Nothing super special but the only computer hardware / infrastructure person.
For the past few months I’ve put in for other stuff elsewhere. Usually score a phone interview.
Supposedly I have a new sort of boss coming Monday but not confirmed.
I’m at the point if I got the chop I really wouldn’t be too upset.
A few core people go away, most operations will cease to function.
Our politicians are importing laborers so that’s not helping.
The vast majority of whom are unskilled and uneducated. Certainly not a help to our overall economy or workforce.
The Gen z generation needs a kick in the ass and 10 or 15 severe bitch slaps daily till they wake up to reality.
One of the worst generations ever and whoever is raising them needs the same.
It really is not just a Gen Z thing. Pretty much all the cooperations follow the same employee business model now and it is powerfully destructive. Everyone is a faceless cog, replaceable in a moment.
There is no longer a concern for the workload nor competent employees. It is just grind or be replaced, quiet quitting is a natural extension.
One small example, most companies now use some sort of online reward system, here is the rub, it is completely impersonal and usually involves giving you a fraction of points and offers other companies stranded products as rewards for point purchase, honestly can you think of anything less personal and demeaning for putting in extra effort, it is a cold practice that amounts to serving one gruel.
The only thing that keeps my work effort high is my desire to honor Christ. The in your face eagerness to replace an employee with an incompetent DIE hire, the serf like reward process and the practice of telling everyone we are all “excellently average” (no one gets a top appraisal anymore) has driven this new work culture.
This is what happens when you promote a culture of selfishness and entitlement beginning at birth. Children who are taught they should immediately be gratified grow up into adults who are extremely demanding, have no sense of responsibility, and believe their immediate wishes should be fulfilled without regard to anyone else.
Gen Z is keeping we Boomers working.
That's really what's going on and has been for a while. Since Obamanomics, these companies have run thin on staffing and as talent moves on or retires, they're being replaced with someone who has no experience at all.
Add in the woke workplace and the pound-#metoo risks, and it's all gone mercenary. It's overdue to do so but it changes the dynamic when you go to work every day surrounded by intentional strangers who offer little help and a lot of risks.
