Apparently water beads are used for crafts. Here is what they can do if ingested:

Water bead pearls are a polymer gel which absorbs water and swells. They are often about 1/8” or so, but can swell considerably to a little less than an inch in normal use. A teaspoon of them typically absorb about 3 cups of water. With full access to water they could certainly get even bigger.
