Kalen DeBoer will be the new head coach of Alabama, filling the role vacated by Nick Saban after the legendary coach retired this week, the team announced Friday.

“I have always had an incredible respect for Alabama football and its commitment to excellence,” DeBoer said in a statement released by the school. “The tradition-rich history of this program is unmatched across the landscape of college athletics, and I look forward to continuing that moving forward. Following Coach Saban is an honor. He has been the standard for college football, and his success is unprecedented. I would not have left Washington for just any school.

“The chance to lead the football program at The University of Alabama is the opportunity of a lifetime. My family and I feel truly blessed and look forward to becoming a part of the Tuscaloosa community.”

This seems like kind of a rebuke to Nick Saban. There were many Saban disciples to choose from, and they chose a South Dakotan with no connection to Saban.

I’m all for capitalism and success. But to fawn all over your players on Monday and bolt by Wednesday is hypocrisy in my book. Somewhere there needs to be a balance

Notre Dame might be able to keep it close now.

Assuming you are referring to DeBoer, as a Husky fan, I guess “contract” meant nothing to him. He signed a contract through 2028. Not sure if his contract said anything about bolting under certain conditions. If it did, that was a mistake on the UW athletic department. If it didn’t, DeBoer should have had the character and values to honor his own commitment.

Color me very disappointed.

Can’t think of a Saban disciple that would fit. Smart has built a program at Georgia on a par with Alabama. And Sarkesian is firmly entrenched at Texas and will be in the SEC next year. Lane Kiffen is not highly regarded in Alabama. Can’t think of any other candidates. That said...not sure I agree with this choice, but I’m willing to give him a chance. He better beat Auburn or he’s toast!😎

He’s talking about Kalen DeBoer, not Saban.

Yes, I was referring to DeBolt not Saban.

As a lifelong WSU Cougar fan I do like the irony of UW stabbing WSU in the back to make big bucks only to have their football program into total disarray by the NIL, transfer portal and DeBolt etc

The final blow was UW’s olive branch to schedule WSU at the start of the season like Idaho and South Dakota Mining College used to be as a “practice game”

Karma is a b^tch

Gotta love a coug. Let me refresh your memory with 2 words...Mike Price

For my the rest of you, Mike Price was the HC of the WSU football team. He had back to back 10+ win seasons, lost the Rose Bowl game that year but got hired by Alabama. However he liked the girls and when he got on campus he started hanging out at the local bars trying to pick up the Coeds. The president of the university called him on the carpet. So Mike’s answer was to double down at a golf tournament in Florida by going to a strip joint and picking up 2 strppers and taking them back to his hotel. The strippers ran up a $1000 room service tab in to-go boxes.

When news got back to Tuscaloosa he was promptly fired without ever coaching a game.

DeBoer might be an excellent choice. His teams are passing teams...Alabama is more grind it out running than passing. All DeBoer has to do is bring his successful passing know-how to bama and keep sabans running philosophy intact and bama gonna be very good.
P.S. I really don’t care. FBS is semipro ball now. Players can get cash payment. Too bad...it is used to mean something to the student body...now...meh..just another excuse to get high.

Lou Holtz had a rider in his Minnesota contract that said if the Notre Dame job came p, he could apply. I think he replaced Gerry Faust. Some places might hold him to the contract but others will look at it do they want to keep someone around who’s going to be miserable because you wouldn’t release them?

Never felt I understood why he left MSU.
Maybe he saw the school and boosters and alums weren’t willing to commit to doing what needed to be done to enjoy the success he later had at Alabama?

In my opinion he’s not wise to want to be the successor of Nick Saban. How did the successor of John Wooden do? Or the successor of Vince Lombardi?

Sarkisian, Kiffin, and Dabo were supposed to be frontrunners. Lanning too, but he declined it.
