Alaska and United Airlines said Monday they found problems with loose hardware following the grounding of all their Boeing 737 MAX 9 jets due to last week's mid-flight door plug blowout.
Boeing and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) gave airlines authorization on Monday to begin inspections of 737 MAX 9 planes after they were grounded following the Friday incident aboard an Alaska Airlines plane.
The FAA said on Monday that all 171 737 MAX 9 jets worldwide would remain grounded until operators inspected the vehicles' left and right cabin door exit plugs, door components and fasteners.
It's the latest problem to hit Boeing and the 737 MAX, which were previously grounded following crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia that killed a total of 346 people.
The FAA cleared 737 MAX planes for flight in the U.S. in November 2020, though the fallout from the crashes brought about the resignation of top Boeing executives, a criminal investigation and a massive financial hit for the company. It wasn't immediately clear what caused the exit door plug to suddenly detach on Friday, but it followed an earlier issue with 737s that saw Boeing advise airlines last month to inspect the jets for potential loose hardware in the planes' rudder control systems.
United Airlines said earlier on Monday that it found loose bolts on the door plugs of several of these jets during inspections. Alaska Airlines announced Monday night that "reports from our technicians indicate some loose hardware was visible on some aircraft."
Both airlines have canceled hundreds of flights due to the grounding.
Meanwhile, the door plug that detached from the Alaska Airlines plane that's become the focus of a federal investigation was found in a backyard by a schoolteacher identified as "Bob" in Portland, Oregon...

So let me guess, Castle Nuts, Safety Wire and Cotter Pins WERE NOT SPECIFIED FOR USE on 737 MAX-9?
Boeing = MORONS. They seem to NEVER learn.
I don’t fly anywhere any more, but if I did, and I found out my flight was on a 737-MAX, I’d change flights.
NO WAY I’d get on on of those..
If it’s Boeing, I ain’t going!
“Boeing = MORONS. They seem to NEVER learn.”
The entire company is like that.
Ensuring flight critical fasteners are properly torqued and secured is kind of an aviation fundamental so the fact that there is a pattern of flight critical fasteners not being properly tightened and secured in multiple areas of the aircraft seems to a continuing problem for Boeing suggests that it is indicative of some larger systemic problem internal to Boeing. and it's supplier base.
The person who found the door plug identified as “Bob.” Was “Bob” previously “Bobbie”?
When MD took over this company, it began to Stuka it.
Last sept my wife and I flew to New Mexico from Florida. I carefully planned the trip to avoid any aircraft in the Max family. On the second part of the return trip one plane was substituted for the 700 series we were supposed to be on. For 2 hours I said my hail Mary’s.
The flight crew didn’t ensure the breaker to the CVR was pulled.
That needs scrutiny as well.
” Stonecipher, who promptly affirmed: “When people say I changed the culture of Boeing, that was the intent, so that it’s run like a business rather than a great engineering firm.”
