During COVID, the principal purpose for HCQ was as an ionophore to drive zinc into cells to prevent replication of the virus. Azithromycin was given to deal the bacterial infections secondary to the viral SARS-CoV-2 infection. Given alone, HCQ has little efficacy against an active COVID infection.
