It Turns Out Paper Straws Might Pose a Serious Problem Too
ScienceAlert ^ | 1/6/24 | Cary Cassella

Paper straws are not quite the eco solution many had hoped for. Not only do these liquid slurping alternatives tend to wilt in a frustratingly fast manner, they contain low levels of forever chemicals, according to new research.

How that impacts the health of an individual slurper is unknown, but because forever chemicals – also known as poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (aka PFAS) -- can take centuries to break down to a fraction of their concentration in the environment, these straws are not necessarily 'biodegradable'

It's Saturday, stayed at a brand hotel in a very liberal city and for the orange juice they only offered paper straws.

The straws disintegrated midway through the glass, I hate paper straws.

Leftists ruin everything good..

We went from plastic straws wrapped in paper to paper straws wrapped in plastic. 🙄

When I was a kid, a paper straw was just a paper straw. The top part always turned to mush before you finished whatever you were drinking. I learned to quit using straws and, since then, use maybe two or three a year. I never understood why it’s so hard to just drink the beverage normally.

The headline use of “too” is false. The straw industry was turned upside down based on a research papers by , I think he was ten years old. There wasn’t a problem with plastic straws in the first place

Sometimes you just gotta have straws.

If these so-called “forever chemicals” take centuries to break down, they must be pretty non-reactive, so they’re not likely to do anything too horrible while they’re in your system.

it’d be nice if they built cars out of ‘forever chemicals’.
Sneakers at least...

Living in a feminized America means worrying about all sorts of trivial matters.

If this bugs you, get a set of “bombillo” stainless steel straws like they use in South America. They sell them cheap on Amazon. It’s better to get the kind with silicon mouthpieces and a pipe brush for cleaning.

You can also look very cool in a coffee shop when you whip one out. They are like 4 for $9.

Is Oxygen a forever chemical?

How about CO2 (oh it’s bad).

Uranium may be on the fence.

Oxygen is very reactive, CO2 to a lesser degree. Uranium, like other heavy metals, is a bad thing biochemically.

I thought plastic straws were choking whales and sea turtles to death in those massive plastic trash islands in the ocean? People who object to plastic straws should be required to stop using them. And all other plastics. Let luddites live like Ludd.
