A new study shows Minnesota and Wisconsin are in the top 10 states for the most fatal crashes involving animals.
KSTP’s sister station KAAL reports that a study from John Foy and Associates says 8% of deadly crashes in Minnesota involved animals, while 14% of deadly crashes involved animals in Wisconsin. Montana has the highest percentage of animal-related fatal crashes at 23%.
The Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS) recommends motorists be extra careful between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m., as that’s when animals are generally the most active.
DPS says drivers should use their high beams when possible, and if you’re going to hit an animal, don’t swerve as you may hit another car or lose control of your vehicle.
I can believe Montana. I was driving to Glacier Park from South Dakota early in the morning and eastern Montana was white knuckle driving with all the deer along the road.
So you’re the guy who chased all those deer to North Idaho!?
I figured they would have designated badger crossings up there.
They should raise the age for an animal drivers license to 3.

I have seen dozens of deer driving at night in NH. Especially during the rut or hunting season. The fullness of the moon also increases the amount of deer moving around at night.
However, I have never seen as many deer on the side of the road as driving across PA.

Exactly!! We were camping in South Dakota several years back and woke up hearing yelling and screaming. A historical man walked into the campgrounds blood soaked from his injuries.
He chose to swerve and went off a steep embankment killing his wife.
The deer survived unscathed.
I’ve hit both deer and moose and discovered vehicle repairs are a much better option than burial expenses.
A tip for those living in the cold north: Get a heavy duty grille guard for your pickup. The idea is to save the vehicles radiator. If you hit a large animal there will be some vehicle damage, but you can at least drive away from it instead of having a disabled vehicle where you could freeze to death.
The only way I would ride a motorcycle at night in south central TN, is to not exceed 25-30 mph. Since 2018, our 07 highlander has two deer kills, and several near hits, one that tapped the bumper cover.
There have been a few cyclist deaths from deer strikes in Lewis county, since we moved here 7 years ago.
Probably fatal crashes for the humans because WI and MN have moose and bears and other big animals.
