Perfect storm on Russia’s egg market, authorities to step in

The Russian government is taking urgent measures to stabilise the situation in the local egg market where prices have soared more than 40% this year. Egg farmers claim that the industry is in “a perfect storm”.

Russia’s federal veterinary watchdog Rosselhoznadzor recently greenlighted egg imports from Turkey. This country, alongside Azerbaijan, is expected to help Russia to fill the gap in the egg market, the agricultural ministry commented.

The price hike has happened due to a perfect storm in the Russian egg industry, Leonid Kkolod, an independent agricultural analyst, told the local press. Over the past 2 years, Russian egg farms have been silently suffering having to maintain operations with ‘negative profitability’, Vladimir Mkhitaryan, director of the Krasnodar-based poultry farm Novorosiisk, disclosed. The farm ended 2022 with a marginality level of -3.6%. During the first 9 months of 2023, it reached -17%. Some farms curtailed operation while others scaled down production, Mkhitaryan said.

Among the reasons that pushed the profitability into the red zone, tough import dependence is the first to blame. Mkhitaryan said that the most painful is the need to purchase vaccines and feed additives abroad now when imports from Western countries are largely restricted.

“Equipment at poultry farms is also predominately of the European origin. Even if you manage to source components, you will do it at exorbitant prices,” Mkhitaryan admitted.

Eggs are nearly the perfect food.

However, I rarely buy them at the supermarket.

Many people in my neighborhood will put fresh eggs up for sale at the end of their driveways, as they keep chicken coops in their backyards.

These are the freshest and most nutritious eggs. They vary in colors from baby blue to hot pink.

Also vary greatly in sizes.

Nice picture. I agree with you, eggs are the perfect food especially on a budget. You’re also right about those farm fresh eggs being better. I’d rather have variety and a little bit of color than uniform white or brown.

…..but at least they aren’t bankrupt! Their debt is 17 percent of GDP, the US: 120 percent! ….with $$$ 33 trillion in debt! ( not counting unfunded liabilities)the US’s $$$ 1Trillion now in interest payments on debt alone……while Vlad is bringing in hundreds of billions in cash, a month!

It doesn’t take a genius to see who collapses. I await senile Joe to confiscate (steal) $300 billion of Russia’s frozen western assets….for all the world to see..it will be the final spike in the USD hegemony.

And Vlad says Checkmate, again!

The Putinistas don’t like it when they can’t get their omelettes. You post a story and they get all worked up. We should be posting our favorite egg dishes every day.

I mean it’s not like the Ruble has failed by 95% in the past year or anything…Oh wait…it has.

And, Medvedev is talking about how they are going to take Odessa again. I wonder if that would take a week or two. I guess they will have a boat parade this time.

Well, they could…but the country without a Navy is kicking their asses in the Black Sea. How embarrassing is that?

Maybe in 2024 we will see another 300,00 dead Russians. But, the mongols like to suffer…so it will be a good year for them.
