That wouldnt’ be surprising to find that some of the works of the Masters were created through some sort of assembly line in order to pump out paintings for the maximum dollar.
Also, lesser artists would have been apprentices and they probably helped out where they could.

Agree, plenty of paintings are attributed to e.g., Rembrandt or his school.

Yes, it was customary for assistants to do the less difficult parts of the painting, such as background figures. The artist did the most important parts, such as the hands, the hair, and the faces.

Joseph didn’t get much write-up in the Bible either. Seems intentional - in both the Bible and the painting. For good reason. No slight against Joseph, but he wasn’t a main figure in the story.
