Two flags were raised that day: The first one was raised right after the brunt of the heavy fighting up Mt. Suribachi; A second, larger flag replaced the original one after a higher-up on one of the boats offshore demanded he wanted the flag. Rosethal’s photo was of the raising of the replacement flag.
