VISION
SFWA recognizes that inclusion and equality are ongoing processes that require active effort, as well as acknowledgement of existing inequities, including those rooted in imperialism, colonialism and white supremacy.
This committee will seek to address power imbalances that have historically marginalized people by re-centering marginalized voices and stories.
Our commitment to creating a more equitable organization includes, but is not limited to, increasing awareness of and sensitivity to the intersections of race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, class, age, ethnicity, and perspective; redressing the the legacies of imperialism in an international context; questioning institutional biases and “the way things have always been,” especially when those “traditions” and entrenched systems marginalize historically underrepresented voices; and generally serving as an advocate for marginalized and underrepresented voices both within SFWA and in the SF/F community as a whole.
We are fully aware of the paradox of tolerance, and exclusionary, bigoted or hate speech, open or covert, will not be tolerated by SFWA as a whole or the DEI committee in particular.
MISSION
A) Provide guidance internally within SFWA on matters of diversity, equity and inclusion, regarding membership policies, outreach, etc.
B) Provide guidance to external partners to break outmoded thinking/practices and provide safer spaces for the historically marginalized.
C) Gather incident reports/complaints related to the committee’s scope for discussion and where necessary, action.
REPORTING
Diversity, equity and inclusion is a community endeavor and, as such, we in SFWA’s DEI Committee rely on the community.
If you see, hear about, or experience exclusionary, bigoted, hateful, or otherwise intolerant behavior in SF/F, publishing, and other related communities, organizations, events, and spaces, please report it

Put a fork in them.
New guardrails for general consumption fiction. Creativity now neutered.
[Jason Sanford] then asserted, “Baen’s Bar has also become well-known in the genre community as a place where racism, sexism, homophobia and general fascism continually pop up.”
There's a picture of Jason Sanford accompanying the article. He looks like a poofter.
OK, according to wikihahapedia he met his wife in Thailand while working for the "Peace Corps". So he's probably not a poofter.
But his whining about racism etc. gives me good cause to think ill of him.
Baen has lots of conservative or libertarian leaning authors. I would say send this to Larry Correia (Monster Hunter, Forgotten Warrior Saga) and let him fisk it, but I think he already has.
I have an idea - these talent-less idiots can re-write the great Science Fiction but make all the characters thin-skinned sexual weirdos who stop in the midst of action and give a lecture readers and/or viewers on being WOKE and ‘tolerant’.
I have more science fiction books than the local library.
I have bought only a handful of them in the past few years.
Black trans scientists creating amazing new technology to explore the universe—now that is some amazing fiction.
Lol.
“Baen’s Bar has also become well-known in the genre community as a place where racism, sexism, homophobia and general fascism continually pop up.”
Ah—that must be why I like those books so much.
Lol.
We should do exactly as they encourage and report this bigoted, hateful, and otherwise intolerant behavior of the SFWA against people of Caucasian descent to the SFWA. I trust they will take firm action and investigate themselves immediately. Should be an easy start as their head is already up their own ass.
See Something? Say Something! Let's get to it! Report them at dei@sfwa.org, today!
The Screenplay contests are doing the same push for DEI content then, in the same pitch, complaining that entries are very low this season. Duh.
Although Han Solo has hired Chewbaca, the latter is clearly a sidekick, and his "people" are absent in any decision making positions throughout both imperial and rebel communities.
I like the Monster Hunter series, and also John Ringo’s Posleen War books. Don’t do too much SciFi/Horror books generally.
No surprise here. I love sci-fi and I collect it when I can but I stop at about the mid 80’s stuff and only go after the classics (40s thru 70s). I have plenty to read until I die so I don’t give a rats tush for this DEI crud.
LOL...I had NO idea.
The entire writing industry, regardless of medium, regardless of genre, has no use today for white male writers.
Star Wars is colonial fantasy: How our future imaginings are limited by our past.
Star Wars and the Ongoing Problem of Race.
And here's a study from the halls of academia:
No one was thinking that in 1977. 20th Century Fox was just praying they’d make their money back. Mark Hamill has said that, at the time, they’d consider themselves lucky if Star Wars did as well as Planet of the Apes. Only Steven Spielberg could see that Lucas may have a huge hit on his hands.
They have been doing this for years through the publishers and awards like the Hugos and Nebulas. If you want decent SF, check out the annual nominations for the Prometheus Awards.
SFWA is slow. RWA (Romance Writers of American) made a similar announcement in late 2020. Recently they got their panties in a twist because one of their members refused to update an older novel to agree with current wokeness standards. They encourage writers to hire special editors to make sure skin tones, eye colors. and hair colors aren’t described as food (chocolate, vanilla, beet red, etc). Luckily, not all romance writers or SFWA writers are members of those organizations.
Asking writers to bowdlerize their own work? How enlightened. 🙄
